COULD IF I WOULD © 1997 by Roger Dodge I could if I would, don’t so I won’t, don’t even tempt me to try. I ain’t so I can’t, might isn’t right, the logic doesn’t fly. I’ll make more mistakes than a person should make from the day I’m born till I die. I could if I would, don’t so I won’t, I can’t win, I’ll tell you why... I had a best friend early in life who Judased me in a pinch. I was a fool to call him my friend, I never should have given an inch. He called me his partner and talked about trust just like best friends do. What I got was lies and deceit, a good old fashioned screw. Well I could if I would, don’t so I won’t, no that won’t even fly. I ain’t so I can’t, might isn’t right, even when I’m tempted to try. I’ll make more mistakes than a friend ought to make from the day I’m born till I die. I could if I would, don’t so I won’t, I can’t win, but maybe I’ll try. I’ve had some loves, I thought they would last, “I love you” had a sweet sound. Like you they were pretty and I thought we were friends, so I started taking ‘em down. I fell in love and flew in free fall, sure I was happiness bound. But just when I thought I had me a life, loving screwed me around. Well I could if I would, don’t so I won’t, I won’t live an empty lie. I ain’t so I can’t, might isn’t right, no reason for me to cry. I’ll make more mistakes than a lover ought to make from the day I’m born till I die. I could if I would, don’t so I won’t, I can’t win, but baby I’ll try. I lost my direction, didn’t know what to do to get things going right, So me and the guys started getting high just to make it through the night. I crossed up with the law, lost my health, spent my dough, got probation and a fine. So if your trying to put me back through all that, I hope you choke when you do your line. ‘Cause I could if I would, don’t so I won’t, even when I’m tempted to try. I ain’t cause I can’t, might isn’t right, I won’t need an alibi. I’ll pay for more mistakes than a man ought to make from the day I’m born till I die. I could if I would, don’t so I won’t, If I can’t win, then maybe I’ll tie!
