In a media marketplace overflowing with singers, West Vancouver’s AJ Woodworth has confidently staked her place with a distinctive voice, look, and writing style. Upon hearing her, you immediately catch the classic influences, though invariably the songs always come out sounding like AJ. Though a relatively new name to many, AJ’s career has been a lifetime in the making. By her early teens she was a regular performer in musical theatre, competing in contests and festivals. In 2002 she was asked to be lead singer in the pop group New School, resulting in the hits ‘Alright’ and ‘Misunderstood’. AJ also showed a sign of things to come, when she wrote the group’s holiday hit ‘The Sweetest Christmas’. Throughout her years of musical growth, her country influences kept resurfacing. When the pop group had run it’s course, AJ decided to take some time off to concentrate on developing her singing and writing skills and focus on her first love — country. She found a friend in Canadian legend Susan Jacks, resulting in trip to Nashville which rekindled her drive for a solo career. While studying under respected vocal coach, Judith Rabinovitch, she came to the attention of her husband, producer Bill Buckingham. Shortly afterward, she returned to Nashville with him where she completed her first full-length album. The project produced two singles, “Life Went On (While You Were Gone)”, and “Crushed.” The album introduced AJ to the country music community, but by this time she had further developed as a writer-performer, and wanted to show the greater range of vocal styles she possessed. She placed the song “Runaway” on the debut album by former Canadian Idol finalist Jaydee Bixby, and also sang a duet with him on another track. AJ has now completed a new collection of songs realizing her expanded talents. She has recently assembled her own team, including producers Paul Shatto and David Wills (The Higgins) and co-songwriter Jesse Tucker (Jessie Farrell). An ardent dog-lover with an infectious sense of humor, AJ takes her “long road to overnight success” in stride. In a music scene that’s searching for answers, AJ is now poised to make her mark in the hearts and ears of listeners everywhere. It’s time to welcome the country-soul of AJ Woodworth.
