Alexis "Eggie" Egg: singer / songwriter / composer / pianist / writer / filmmaker / artist / geek. She aims to slowly peel the shell from the universe. Her voice swiftly shifts through emotions, personas and octaves, while her songwriting, inspired by everything from pop to classical to jazz to various world folk traditions, weaves you through her influences, passions and imaginary worlds. Exploring the piano and writing music since she was introduced to the instrument at five, Alexis has been hooked on sound for as long as she can recall. She went on to teach herself piano, sing opera, play trumpet in jazz bands and youth symphonies, forge new neural pathways with Balinese Gamelan, and delight in African singing, drumming and dancing, all the while writing her music along the way. As a teenager, she felt the fervor of rock and popular music. Too shy to play during the day, she abandoned sleep and spent her nights crafting songs at the piano. A year later, encouraged by some wonderful people, she applied to a national youth composition program at CalArts, and was one of six accepted. There, for the first time, she felt that music was something she could not only do, but was something with which she might have a future. She worked with some wonderful teachers and composers, all of whom encouraged her that music was the path she was meant to follow. Still hesitant and beckoned by the brainy sides of her, she attended the University of Washington, helped along by an academic scholarship. There, she experimented with various possible futures, in particular math and creative writing, finally ending up in the Digital Arts and Experimental Media program after being enticed by the digital sound classes. There, under the encouragement of awesome artists and teachers, she experimented with computer music and 20th century compositional techniques, intrigued by a more textural and mathematic approach to organizing sound. In the program she was also able to explore a visual side to her art for the first time, diving into experimental film. She went on to win the international Barbara Aronofsky Latham Award for Emerging Experimental Video Artist at the Ann Arbor Film Festival for one of her first student films, Cataract. Realizing that for her, music is visual and visuals are musical, and that all art functions under similar rules- emotion, detail, contrast, rhythm, texture, breath, tension, release- she hopes to explore ways to bridge the literary, visual and aural sides of her. She is currently working on her debut album, with plans to release an onslaught of filmic and experimental video to accompany her music. Her favorite food is homemade tortilla soup and her favorite animal is the hippo.
