Biography

Cal first started on Bass Guitar, and was taught by his Grandmother Hildred Hall, who was a great Pianist. Cal first started on Bass Guitar, and was taught by his Grandmother Hildred Hall, who was a great Pianist. It was a small price to pay for insight from someone at her level". Cal started playing guitar at age 11 after hearing an album of Dwayne Friend, "Dwayne Friend Picks Happy Goodman Hits". Cal soon discovered the music of Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed and instantly fell in love with the Chet Atkin's style of playing. Cal went on to travel with Dwayne Friend at age 15 and later produced and played lead and steel guitar on several Dwayne Friend albums. Dwayne even moved to Cal's hometown so the two could work together and produce a tv show for one season together "That's Gospel". Dreamwind Records owner and 1997 Gold Cross Instrumentalist Of The Year, Cal Denison has traveled with, Matt Coleman (band for CMT Trick My Truck Live Shows), CMA nominated Rich McCready (Winner of TNN Video of the Century “Hangin’ On”) Earl Wear and Coltrain, The Helmsmen, Gospel Lads, Desi Hickman, Multiple Dove Award Winner Dwayne Friend, Rick Cook, Don Collins, Sarah Dunn, Steve Brooks And produced and played on well over 500 albums including Grammy Award Winner Jody Miller and Dwayne Friend. Cal produced a one hour TV show for two years “Music Of The Midwest” featuring national and regional talent including Brooks and Dunn, Brad Paisley, Perfect Stranger, Grammy winner Jody Miller, Dove winner Dwayne Friend, The Hemphills, Les Gilliam, Byron Berline and some of the worlds greatest fingerstyle guitarists. The show aired World wide over The Global Broadcast Network, RFD TV, Dish Network, and Direct TV and was viewed by millions of people around the world. Cal’s instrumental music has been used for numerous national and regional TV and radio programs and documentaries as theme music, including ESPN, The Lohman Game Calls nationally syndicated radio program The Christian Sportsman, Christian Country Today, and The Great Plains Review. TV documentaries include The Waco Incident, and Ruby Ridge. Cal was a special guest and has taught and performed at the annual Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in Nashville Tennessee. I have found Cal not only to be a great guitar player, but one of the staunchest supporters of the fingerstyle technique.
