But underneath the shimmering surface lies something more insidious – a nervous energy running throughout. Behind the ear-candy melodies are lyrics of betrayal, heartbreak, and self-destruction. It might seem surprising then, that Mike Kurtz, 23, is an upbeat kind of guy. In his former career as frontman of TV Babysitter, hailed by the Philadelphia Weekly as “brilliantly skewed, synth-heavy weird-rockers”, Kurtz was known more for his eccentric costumes, on-stage dance moves, and comic book lyrics than for any personal revelations. Since then, Kurtz has left school, joined the workforce and found love – hardly the stuff of tragedy.
But he can’t stop thinking: with so much to live for, there is so much to loose. It is this conflict of feelings – happy and celebratory and scared as hell that this good fortune will soon run out – that comes to the forefront of Champagne For Dinner. When nothing seems certain, the best thing to do is to sing, dance, and listen to some good, old-fashioned synthpop – nostalgic, hollow, but damn fun.
