If you hate hollow, 2-chord drivel about nothing, you're gonna like Chris Hudgins. What you’ll find here are satisfying melodies with meaning – the kind of music your tired mind's been searching for. “Make art where you are, whenever you can.” That’s what Chris Hudgins does. The full-time singer/musician/poet works to make the time to create. And create, he does, his memorable music and lyrics obviously the product of great inspiration. Chris grew up in a small town on the High Plains of Texas, playing football and acting in school plays. “Early on we had really modest means, but I don’t remember that part of it so much. Dad and Mom provided for us in a peaceful environment, and we always really knew what it feels like to be loved. That’s something that I later found is actually rare!” This early experience along with the music that played through the house at the time helped inform his musical sense of dissonance and resolution. The family’s musical collection ranged from Bread and The Beach Boys to Keith Green and Second Chapter of Acts. “I remember coming home at night and just almost crying because I wanted to just ‘be’ music and didn’t know how to. Good music creates a ‘moment’ for me which is an experience I wanted to re-create for myself and others.” Chris studied music in college, getting some once-in-a-lifetime performance opportunities throughout, like singing with vocal group Take 6, opening for Bill Mallonee & The Vigilantes, and performing live at the 2000 Dove Awards. But it was here in college where Chris learned the secrets to writing a good song. And a good song is one that connects with an audience member, according to Hudgins. “The flighty, right side of my brain sometimes wants to just express something that’s never been done, to just experiment all of the time. But I keep that in check by keeping known forms in there along with accessible elements. In getting to know how to ‘speak’ to people, I found that life experience is an ingredient in song writing you just can’t fake. And the more I get of it, the more approachable my music becomes. When the song and the music calls out to something inside of the listener, it’s an amazing phenomenon I really can’t put into words!” When asked about his process, Chris replies, “The night’s perfect for songwriting. There are a lot fewer distractions, so you can hear what’s in your head versus what’s going on outside of it. So the night’s perfect for that. Oh yeah, and heartache. That always brings the muse out to play!” And how does this muse play out in sound? Chris Hudgins’ music rubs shoulders with some of the best: Bruce Hornsby, Nick Drake, Keane, Jeff Buckley, Ryan Adams, and Radiohead. But the mixture of the above is done so uniquely that you’ll have to hear it to believe it. This is melody and meaning, sing-able and memorable – just good music!
