Earl Ephemeral are James, Julia, and Paul with contributions from Harriet, Miles, Andy and Byron. Earl Ephemeral are also a virtual band recording music to be published on the web. For the listener, the idea is to mix the experience of listening to an album with that of going to a gig. We write songs, record them and then publish them on our website but the songs, like websites, are always under construction and never deemed finished. This means any member of the band (or public) can replace bass parts, do a re-mix, re-structure the song, re-write and re-sing the lyrics, add solos, percussion, re-master or whatever. So the listener plays the music on the website like they might an album but the music changes as it might during a tour. For the band, the idea is to replace the process of physically going to the rehearsal studio to work out songs with a process of embellishing already recorded material to work out songs. Each track or stem that goes to make up a song is made available on our website as a .wav file for download by whoever wants it. Essentially, we're applying the ideas behind open source software to music making. All Earl Ephemeral music has creative commons copyright. This is partly because we find the idea of copyright and intellectual property ludicrous - much like claiming ownership of the air you breathe. In a perfect world we wouldn't copyright anything but then of course somebody might come along and do that and then start profiteering which isn't what this is about. Feel free to download, copy, cover or steal any of the music here. The approach is a essentially a 'philanthropical' one. An entire industry has built itself on the business of making music and some amazing music has been recorded as a result. However, some music business models impose limitations on making music which we seek to avoid. So no copyright to fight over, no claims of ownership to breed resentment, no release deadlines to stifle creativity and produce rush-recorded music, no limits on the number of versions of a song made available. Our hope is that we're able to produce something that someone will enjoy, nothing more.
