“Many Styles for All Occasions” El charco started out in the winter of 2004 in South Austin as Jason Ewing (singer/songwriter) and Justin Boyd (basest). Their modest beginnings were proceeded by decades of local Austin musical history. Jason Ewing’s parents were in the music scene in Austin during the glory days. As a child Jason was rubbing elbows with some of our favorite local legends such as Doug Sahm, Rusty Weir, and Jack Morgan. His father, Ronald Ewing, and band “Poor Crow” carved a small niche for the family name in the community during the late 60s and all through the 70s. This rich musical background fostered in Jason a strong thread connecting him from the past into the present Austin music scene. While Jason’s history is full of legendary local influences, Justin Boyd developed from a different sort of Austin setting. By age 14 he was already playing shows around town in the infamous band Sotis Punkmeyer; with Liberty Lunch being one of their most frequented locations. Playing for the public at such a young age definitely created a style and stage presence in Justin which is reminiscent of some of the most energetic and fierce rockers in the business. Together these two combined their rich history and strong musical talents to create El Charco, a blend of country and rock roll which transitions seamlessly between lyrically inspirational folk to the hard, aggressive rock so many Austinites love. By April 3rd of 2005 they released their first CD, “Music Is Not An Industry,” with a CD release party at ATX records on East Oltorf. On March 29th 2005 they picked up their next gig at the Whiskey Bar in Austin gaining momentum and popularity. They’ve blazing a trail through the Texas music scene ever since; playing everywhere from the legendary Antones to the Flamingo Cantina, La Zona Rosa, The Perish, all through the red river district, and Momo’s. One of the their most cherished and frequented venues is that of Lake Travis’ famed Aunt Tillies; where they would often share the stage with Rusty Weir on Thursday nights. Chad finecy joined them in 2008 after moving down from Amarillo TX. With his style of drumming that often resembles “Animal” from the Muppetts, Chad was the piece of the puzzle they were missing. El charco continues to play and write music as their current trio but is often joined by such amazing fellow song writers as Stefen Harpen, Floyd Pinkerton, and sometimes even Ron Ewing (Jason’s father); many of whom are joining them in their up coming album: “All dressed Up & No Where to Go” due out summer 2010.
