In another time, John Rickenbach and Jim O'Toole shared adjoining offices at Fugro West (formerly Fugro-McClelland), a paper-pushing environmental firm in Ventura, California. In another time, John Rickenbach and Jim O'Toole shared adjoining offices at Fugro West (formerly Fugro-McClelland), a paper-pushing environmental firm in Ventura, California. It wasn’t for several months that the two realized the other played guitar. Both were relieved to know that the other was not particularly skilled, and in their natural affinity for mediocrity, a partnership was formed. It had no name at first, but later O’Toole came up with Facial Ticks, an epithet that was calculated to either scare or repulse an audience, which they never really had. Rickenbach immediately agreed to the name. John’s idea (“Good Enough For Government Work”) was rejected as being too long. And it wouldn’t fit on the bass drum. Of course, they didn’t have a bass drum, but that was another problem.Eventually, they got over that little issue, practiced, improved, and wrote songs. Some are pretty darn good.
