The FLATLANDS group initially came together from opposite directions. While all of the team went to Abingdon School, Tom and Rob were the lead singer and drummer, respectively, of the school’s indie folk band “Midnight Run”, while Nat was one of the brains behind prog-rock epics served up by rival school band “The Aureate Act”. As they approached the end of their time at school, they looked to the future: they were all taking gap years before going to uni and so they came together one night in September 2016 to form the skeleton of a new band. Looking for a bassist proved difficult: no one in their year who played bass really wanted to commit to a band with big aspirations. Jamie, however, had always wanted to learn and so offered up his dedication to the trio and set himself the task of learning the bass in two months before their first gig. Amazingly, he pulled it off and FLATLANDS band was finally complete. Since then, FLATLANDS have gone from strength to strength, gigging with numerous venues around Oxford and supporting bands such as REWS, Yonaka, RedFaces and many more. Hooked on the gig scene, FLATLANDS decided to move away from making demos with their good friend at Fairmile Sounds and get serious about making a splash in the Oxford music world. Shortly after this decision, they debuted their first studio-recorded songs on their EP “Provisional Licence” in January 2017. With a second EP being prepped and a tight live act practiced and perfected, FLATLANDS looks forward to a big year. They hope to go on tour this Summer and make their way around the 2017 festival circuit. They also can’t wait for their first headline show in March.
