Born November 9, 1983 in Macon, GA, G. Gardner grew up in surroundings that promoted music. Born November 9, 1983 in Macon, GA, G. Gardner grew up in surroundings that promoted music. He notes his mom as being one of the first people to influence his musical tastes stating, “My mom would play music on Saturday mornings while I helped her clean the house. I can remember dancing around with her and using the broomstick as a microphone. Those were the good times. But I never imagined I would become a music artist myself. That was the furthest thing from my mind.” G. Gardner’s step-dad was a DJ at a local radio station, so every Saturday night, his family would crowd into one room and have what felt like a huge party. So as far as you look back into his life, music has been a driving force in his existence. G. Gardner’s influences started at home and stem from a decade of southern Hip-Hop artists such as Kilo Ali and Outkast to soulful crooners such as D’Angelo, Maxwell, and Anthony Hamilton. All of these influences are evident in G. Gardner’s sound, which is smooth but still has traces of 808 drums and booming bass lines. While growing up, music was prevalent in G. Gardner’s household, but his parents were persistent on him getting an education and being able to express himself. Because of this, G. Gardner took a liking to writing poetry and reading books. These hobbies carried over to what G. Gardner does now, and he says that writing poetry as a youngster helped him to write songs for the album. G. Gardner states, “When I would write, I would never hold back any emotions, and I think that writing at an early age helped me put how I feel into words. I always focused on how my friends would go through different situations in relationships, so relationships and how people treated one another was a major topic for me. Love is one of those influences that cannot be overlooked. While writing this album, we drew from exploring a lot of personal experiences and analyzing many things that people in relationships go through every day. Those times are what set this album apart from the other ones on the market right now.” G. Gardner is not your average R&B singer, and says that his mission was not to become a singer. He graduated from Fort Valley State University in 2006 with a degree in English with goals of being an English teacher. When he finally landed a teaching job, he met the singer, songwriter, and producer, Brev. The two worked together to create songs to shop to major labels for other artists and had the mission of creating a songwriting company, but after seeing G. Gardner’s YouTube videos, Brev had the idea to create an album. Here G. Gardner stands with his debut album, The Marathon, which is a mixture of all of the things that mean the most to him: having a good time, falling in love, and working through the hard times with your significant other. When asked what he wants people to remember from the album, G. Gardner states, “I want people to remember that being in a relationship is like running a marathon. The people in the relationship can’t give up on one another. They have to keep running the race with each other and have faith that everything will work out. If they do this, it will all be worth it.”
