Don't let those big eyes fool you- Deborah Hazel is a 5 foot musical dynamo. Armed with huge energy and mountains of creativity, singer/songwriter is the newest title Deb has donned. Already proficient in trumpet, cello, and piano, she picked up guitar in college and never put it down. "It was an impulse buy. I went to a performing arts college and everyone played guitar. A friend of mine showed me a few chords, I caught on, and then we piled in the car to get a guitar," she says. "It was one of the best investments I've made." Having already performed on the stages of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Deb is looking forward to the challenge of being a solo act. "I always sang in a choir, so I could always hide amongst the group. Here, on stage, I'm all by myself. It gets scary out there." Deb's honesty is prevolent in her music. Her song "I Wish" showcases her sharp-shooting ability to express her heartbreak, even going so far as to call her ex's new love by name. Other songs, such as "How Does It Feel," explore the nuances of a relationship. "I've learned not to censor myself. Whatever I'm feeling ends up on the page. I can always go back and rephrase later. What's really important is documenting the emotion of the moment." With refreshing honesty, a clear voice, and girl next door looks, Deborah Hazel is ready (and willing!) to emerge as a musical force that will be remembered for years to come.
