Laurice Lanier, of Jackson Tennessee, is a graduate of the Juilliard School. Laurice is taking the world by storm. Laurice Lanier, of Jackson Tennessee, is a graduate of the Juilliard School. Laurice is taking the world by storm. She has performed the role of Dido in the 2001 undergraduate production of Dido & Aeneas. Other roles include Ma in The Tender Land, Anna Hope in The Mother of Us All, and the Third Lady in The Magic Flute. Her solo performances include Handel’s Messiah with the Metropolitan Baptist Church of Washington D.C., Brahm’s Alto Rhapsody, de Falla’s El Amor Brujo with the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, and 2001 Spiritual Concert Series for the Gaby Leib Producoes Culturais in Sao Pao, Brazil, Rio di Janeiro, Brazil and the capital, Brasilia. Awards include Outstanding Musician Award at the Interlochen Arts Camp, and Most Outstanding Musician Award at the Hartwick College Summer Music Festival & Institute. Summer of 1998, Laurice received a scholarship to attend Opera Works Intensive Study at the University of California at Northridge. Summer of 2001, Laurice received a full scholarship to attend The Music Academy of the West under the direction of Marilyn Horne in Santa Barbara, California. January 2002, at Tennessee’s capital hill, she opened the Tennessee General Assembly with a performance if America the Beautiful. February 2002, director Baz Luhrmann selected Laurice for the cast of Puccini’s La Boheme that began on Broadway October of 2002. Because of Laurice’s outstanding achievements, TN House Representative Matt Kisber, February 2002, presented the TN House of Representatives with a written proclamation giving accolades to Laurice Lanier. April 2002, Laurice performed the role of Juno in Juilliard’s 2002 production of John Eccles’ Semele. July 2002, Laurice presented a recital for the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s National Convention in Miami Florida. Laurice has performed at Carnegie Hall as a Leontyne Price Showcase Winner in New York City, the Bach Christmas Oratorio with the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis, TN, the Holiday Pops Concert with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra in Springfield, IL, and a Black History Opera View with Opera Memphis in Memphis, TN. May 2005, Laurice auditioned for the first round of the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition. This competition’s home is in Vienna, Austria. They call this competition the “stock exchange of voices.” This competition allows the young opera singer to make contacts with opera company directors, agents, and managers from all over the world. The competition’s first round took place in New York City’s Metropolitan Opera. Laurice was selected as a winner for New York to go and represent in Vienna. Over 3,000 opera singers auditioned for this competition throughout the world. Only 166 were accepted in the 50 states and Europe to go to the rounds in Vienna. Laurice was one of the 166 in the world selected. Laurice won the first heat in Vienna and was 1 out of 49 in selected to the semi finals. Two days later she sang again and was 1 out of 14 to make it to the finals which were performed in Vienna’s beautiful and elegant city hall. On that day, Laurice won the Barcelona Award. That means she won a spot on the Barcelona Opera stage. The Barcelona Opera House is one of the largest opera houses in Europe. Laurice has had requests from Houston Grand Opera, Houston TX, New York City Opera, La Scala Opera House in Milan, Italy, and the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, Sweden. They have all requested that she perform on their stages. Menno Feenstra, artistic director for the Royal Opera House, said, “When Laurice sings, she makes you forget the bad in your life.” Yes, Laurice is receiving ever-widening acclaim with her rich, warm, and dramatic mezzo quality. Laurice is a member of a group of powerful women of Tennessee called the Hatchie Bottom Diva Society.
