Lelly has been singing most of her life, with an impressive former career as an opera singer and in musical comedy, but has only recently found her niche in rock and roll. Since this discovery, her vibrant and unique style has been described as ‘soaring like a musical eagle’. Lelly K’s love of torch songs began some years ago when she performed a one woman cabaret show at a seafood restaurant in Glebe. She has an impressive background in the Australian music theatre scene, including appearances with the Australian Opera and Victorian State Opera, as well as tours with J.C. Williamsons. Her current showcase is a powerful and eclectic mix of retro rock ‘n’ roll, with soft, original folk ballads as well as influences from punk, country, pop, flamenco and opera. Her style is described as ‘Kate Bush meets Patti Smith’, with further comparisons made to Dusty Springfield, Jefferson Airplane and ‘twinges of The Pixies.’ Lelly K and her band have become very popular with the local concert scene. With the help of her band she has performed at many venues in the Blue Mountains and Sydney including Ironfest, Clarendon House, and the Imperial, Gearin, Roxbury and the Blackburn Family Hotels. Recently Lelly has also started performing solo, acoustic shows, embracing her softer folk ballads. A film of Lelly K and her band performing at the Clarendon was broadcast on Channel 31 in August 2010, and in September song ‘At A Distance’ reached the charts in America. Her debut album ‘Too Close to the Sun’, released December 2010, has been highly acclaimed by Songsmith Magazine and music website Just Plain Folks. The album rocks with a passion and at points a malice usually found only in punk and yet remains poignant and poetic. Her music is powerful, evocative and compelling, with a vocal delivery reminiscent of Grace Jones.
