Do or die Bedstuy Brooklyn. One of the toughest areas in New York to grow up in but for one emcee, it was home. Maurice Beckles a.k.a M.O.E. was born in Christ Church Barbados and 3 years later moved to Ozone Park Queens. In 1988 during the infancy of hip hop, the family settled in Bedstuy Brooklyn and never left. Maurice was raised on St. James Place, the same block as the late great Notorious B.I.G. & Junior Mafia. These major influences would further his passion for creating great music for years to come. As a child his classically trained sister taught him to sing. This training inspired him to undergo years of preparation for his inevitable turn in the lime light. At the age of 13 M.O.E. was nearly signed by a major label until his weight and acne out shined his talent but not his dreams. After several years of practice and shedding a few pounds, Maurice wanted to try something new. He went to visit his cousin Christopher a.k.a Ill-kidd, a known rapper in Toronto. Maurice always wanted to learn to rhyme, especially coming from a block where everyone could rap. After a few months of sharpening his craft in Toronto he headed back to N.Y showing his best friend Ronnie a.k.a Rah-Write his skills. M.O.E. & Rah-Write started a group called N.A.R.C. G.A.N.G. (Niggas About Respect & Cash G’s Against Negativity Growing) they became a force in NY performing all over the city. On Nov 22, 2005 Ronnie K Davis was murdered. This tragedy changed Maurice’s life forever. Their pending record deal was done, hurling M.O.E.’s life into a tail spin. Consumed by depression, suicidal thoughts and lack of inspiration he. met a young trumpeter/composer/producer, Maurice “Mo-Betta” Brown. Mo-Betta had been washed up to Bed Stuy by Hurricane Katrina. And he happened to move in just three doors down from M.O.E.’s home. They instantly became friends and created M.O.E.’s hit single, “Fly Away“ from his debut album M.O.E. “The Miseducation”. They set out on other projects collaborating with great artists such as Chris Robb & Honey La Rochelle. Mo-Betta rolled out the red carpet for M.O.E. introducing him to some of the best talent in the music business today. M.O.E. began performing solo shows with Mo-Betta’s Soul’d U Out band throughout the NYC. Soon after he met three French producers, Jazz E Cut, Skeezo & Kuzzo. Since music is no longer what it should be M.O.E. set out to bring hip-hop back to the roots from which it came. His sound infuses hip-hop with jazz and soul with a bold new style of song writing that is the perfect marriage of Rap & R&B. Now having mastered his debut album and written scores of songs M.O.E. is poised to bring it back. His lyrical content and unique style is unlike anything you’ve heard. There’s no one in the music world like M.O.E.
