Patrick Merrill, a singer/songwriter from Glendora, CA, 30 miles outside of Los Angeles, is rejoining the music scene with what is his best work yet. Two years after embarking on the Music for Hope Tour with the now defunct outfit Life’s Great Tragedy, Merrill has decided to take a new approach with his music. Merrill’s new music presents listeners with songs absconding genre labels, instead allowing them to each decide their own classification. With the quality of work coming out of this young artist, the future holds no limit. With the September 16th launch of Merrill’s first new songs, “Where You Want to Go” and “Ode to Apollo”, it becomes evident that Merrill truly is taking a new approach to his music. While Patrick may be experimenting with new ways of reaching an audience, he is no stranger to music scene. Playing in bands of all different genres from a young age, Merrill’s experience as a musician is evident through his combination of tones, structures, and lyrics. While all types of music has had an effect on him, Merrill is able to combine his influence of alternative rock and blues into an experience that is truly inspirational. Merrill’s musical influences, coupled with the theme of his new work, allows the listener to connect with him, opening the door for understanding of his music. Merrill looks forward to the new freedom the singer/songwriter title gives him. While he still works with friends and other musicians to craft his songs, the new work is truly his. “The decision to initially charge this new venture on my own was definitely a difficult one, as there are pros and cons to both doing stuff on your own and doing stuff with a band, but the freedom that it has allotted me in my approach to this project has made this choice one of my best thus far.” Taking his previous experiences in songwriting and recording, Merrill is now focusing on the structural aspects that make a great song. “Sonically, I’ve focused a lot more attention on the various aspects that create a great song, a lot of layering in this respect. I’ve studied a lot more of what I feel makes my favorite songs great, and I’ve tried to bring these various aspects, both lyrically and musically, to the table.” Maybe it’s Pat’s further understanding of songwriting, or his new level of comfort and confidence in his work, we can expect great things out of Patrick Merrill.
