Before 88, there was none. The street wise gentleman who constantly refers to himself as a “hip hop soul singer “is with out question, in a lane that is all of his own. A lane paved by his silver tenacity, golden delivery, and platinum presence. There was absolutely no way that the man nick named at birth “Boss Hog” (after the 80’s TV. series “Dukes’ of hazard”) wouldn’t make it. It was just a matter of time. The fabric that makes up 88’s style and delivery as a “ hip hop soul singer “ is marvelously ground breaking in that unlike those before him who only evolved the sensibility and perhaps attitude of hip hop, 88 also diligently channels the cadence, prose, and the subtles inner working of it. He doesn’t rely on hip hop as a crutch for vocal shortcomings, for from that he is a proficient a singer as they come for as much as 88 embodies the swagger of his favorites Wu – tang, jay-z and ll cool j so dose with conjure the spiral of his idols baby face, Al green, Prince, Mary j Blidge and Marvin Gaye. “I try to create timeless but still incorporate some taste of the current era I’m in. Every body that’s young wants to be old, and everybody that’s old wants to be young” says 88. “That vibe is already in my blood I was borne with that”. From the beginning it was clear that this talented resident of Virginia isn’t here to play; he means business he rides tracks perfectly and illustrates what he means by putting the rhythm and blues into his hip hop, “rock star” music. “Music is a vehicle for saying something”. 88 explains “It use to be a time when fans would walk three miles to go get your cassette. I want to bring back the times when you would hit the rewind button in the middle of the song because of a hot line the M.C. said, even if I am singing I want that same response. I plan to bring that quality back into music”.
