BIOGRAPHY: SARAH WHEELER and the CAMPFIRE SYNTHESIZERS “One of Vancouver’s punchiest indie singers.”-Fish Griwkowsky Edmonton Sun Sarah Wheeler is a dyed-in-the-wool singer songwriter. With the upcoming release of her third album, Out of the Woodwork, Sarah’s ambition is to present her songs in a direct and passionate way. Although she has enjoyed collaborating with other musicians, lending her vocals to recordings such as “A Small Wonder” by A.C. Newman of the New Pornographers, and sharing the stage with bands including the Be Good Tanyas, this Vancouver-based roots artist has remained focused on writing and performing her own music with vigilant integrity. “Instead of Neko Case's swooping country intonations and general high-end foil, A.C. Newman harmonizes here with Sarah Wheeler, who adds exultant punctuation to the track.”-Brandon Stosuy Pitchfork.com Out of the Woodwork is the culmination of over 20 years of songwriting experience for Wheeler. Her musical heritage was handed down to her through her grandfather’s pioneering efforts as a jazz pianist in local Vancouver clubs during the 50’s and 60’s. Which had won him the chance to back jazz greats including Nat King Cole and Sammy Davis Jr. Growing up in a household amidst the sounds of jazz, classic rock n roll, blues and country set the stage for Wheeler. Having self produced and co-produced her earlier two recordings, this upcoming release frames Wheeler’s newest emotionally charged compositions in a band setting through a long time alliance with producer David Gannett who’s roots infused bottleneck and lap slide techniques lend a fusion of traditional meets modern recording technology. One of Sarah’s specialties is taking pride in and enjoying what she does. This extends to her involvement in various side projects. Sarah has leant her vocals to recordings such as “Don’t You Think We Should Be Closer” by Mark Davis of Old Reliable, and “We Shall Not Flag Or Fail” by Geoff Berner. In addition, Sarah has had the pleasure of playing live with artists such as Tanya Tagaq Gillis the inuit throat singer featured on recordings by Bjork, Steve Dawson producer of Jim Byrnes, Keith Lowe bassist for Bill Frisell, and Ida Nilsen of Great Aunt Ida. Sarah Wheeler is a Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is motivated and driven creatively by her passions and interests. The music that hits closest to the heart for Sarah is folk and alternative country roots music. "Sarah Wheeler has a voice that should lead a large-scale gospel choir." Kerry Gold, Vancouver Sun
