SAYS SHE’S MS. BLAT Self titled As everything seems to have been done over and over, again and again, it never fails that somebody, somewhere, will take an instrument or their voice and make new music again. Here’s an example in Says She’s Ms. Blat, a band name mouthful, who spits fire and plays music with similar fervor. Imagine a sweetly guttural Chrissie Hynde-like vocalist backed by a more circus-minded band. Says She’s Ms. Blat is a pop induced, darkly tinged percussion and piano drenched duo whose playing sounds like it stumbles through walls or stands behind the shoulders of their listeners with painted gnarly fingers and whiskey soaked breath. Says She’s Ms. Blat is Lottie Leymarie on keys/vocals and Bret Puchir on percussion and their sound is powerful and thudding. Puchir’s playing seems to drive Leymarie, pushing and tempting. Leymarie’s singing is imaginative and ideal. Its both saccharine and stinging – especially on the standout track ‘Poseurs’ and dead-on delivery of ‘All These People.’ Someone needs to thank the band for crafting these poignant songs. Leymarie has the temperament and touch to sing with any instrument, sounding as though she could tackle any song and make it her own. Her style is thick in swagger and nonchalance, even as she tries not to sound this way. She’s the Brooklyn equivalent to Lucinda Williams, rich in soul and on fire. And while they’ve done much of note as a duo, crafting a wall of sound with a variety of ideas, their EP leaves the question of what they’ll do next, and perhaps with more players
