My name is Simone Martin. I am a 23 year old singer/songwriter, hailing from Salisbury, North Carolina, who recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During my undergraduate career, I was an active member and soloist in the acappella singing group Harmonyx—opening for John Legend and singing at the NC Governor’s Inaugural Ball. I was also in Rare Formula, a group discovered and managed by Geechi Suede of the pioneer hip hop duo Camp Lo. We opened up for artists such as Boyz II Men and Musiq Soulchild and released both a mixtape and an album on itunes during my senior year of college. Currently, as a college graduate establishing myself as an independent adult, I have decided to allow my newfound self-reliance to translate into my musical endeavors, as I am now pursuing a solo career. My goal is gain widespread airplay of my original songs, while simultaneously facilitating viral popularity. I also hope to do live performances of my original music to expand my following. Although I want my music to appeal to people of all backgrounds and demographics, I would like to serve as a representative for the young, ambitious adults of today, women especially. I make an effort to be relatable and real—touching on stereotypes and taboo topics such as gold-diggers, student loans, uncertainty about what the future holds, etc. Of course, I deal with issues of love, romance, and relationships, but I always try to approach those types of songs from a different angle than most. I think that my versatile yet relevant style will allow me to attract a wide audience. The type of music I sing is also facilitative of widespread appeal. I would like to think my music is a Hip-Pop/R&B combination. My favorite entertainers and vocalists include Beyonce, Diana Ross, Tamia, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, and Michael Jackson. However, my taste is not the least bit limited. I use these and other artists from many different genres and time periods as inspiration. I try to convey my vast taste in music, allowing these varying styles and genres to manifest in my work. For instance, my song “Because I Can” is a blend between R&B and the aggressive elements—the edge, the hard drums, the gritty snares, and the heavy baseline—of a hip hop record, inspired by Portishead. Another of my songs, “When I’m Gone,” has an electro-pop feel, while “Jaded”, a song about heartache and trying to love again after being hurt, has a smooth, classic R&B vibe. “Because I Can” has already been embraced by a few DJs. I hope that you like this and/or the other displayed songs and decide that they are worthy of your support. I hope that I was able to give you a feel for who I am and what I represent, as well as convey my passion for music. Thank you so much for visiting my page, listening to my music, and supporting my movement!
