“Music is so powerful, when I sing and write my music I love to tell real life stories to relate to my audience” Suni Kishi Smith, better known as “Kishi” is an R&B Recording artist and songwriter. Kishi was born in a small town called Winona, MN and raised in Minneapolis, MN. Kishi was born to an African-American father and a Filipino mother. Kishi means “long life” in Japanese, a name that was selected by her mother. Music was introduced to her at a very young age because music flowed in the blood of her family. Kishi’s father and grandmother are the reason for her love of music. Very determined to let the world know her voice, the attention-seeking Kishi would sing at every chance she got whether it was at the store, schools, outside and anywhere anyone would listen. A fan of R&B music especially the Motown era being that her father introduced her to the likes of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and The Supremes. Kishi would often perform Motown songs at talent and fashion shows throughout high school and college. Kishi’s big jump in her music career was when she auditioned for American Idol 2nd season and made it all the way to Hollywood, unfortunately she was sent home but that did not discourage Kishi from continuing to pursue her music career. Having won local talent competitions and asked to perform national anthems at local sports games, Kishi is even more determined to show the world her soulful, sultry voice.
