Life was unraveling for both Jerome Lyons and Jennifer Stevens at the same time. The two members of The Hollow, a new industrial/techno band out of Bakersfield, California, were battling for life, liberty and the pursuit of...music? Both hailed from a repressive family life where being an artist was considered a worthless waste of time. In a miraculous stroke of destiny, the two met by chance and were immediately drawn together by their love of music in January, 2008. They quickly discovered each other's musical capabilities and became engaged 11 days later. The Hollow was officially born in February and débuted June 13, 2008.
The Hollow combines the artistic harshness of industrial EBM,IDM, and breakcore with beautiful, inventive melodies and harmonies with a touch of new wave.
Jerome Lyons (Programming, Synth, Vocals, Producer) became interested in music at the age of 5. By 15, he had started recording and producing his own industrial and ambient music in a home studio. He briefly studied the cello at age 17 and learned to read music. Active in the local music scene, he studied guitar with popular blues musicians. He spent time studying music in religion, as well as the works of various psychologists who studied the effects of sound waves on the moods of people. This translates into the many different styles of music the band produces. He has been in many projects over the years including My Dysfunctional Me, Biotiqua, and Poverty Row along with a solo project, Wilted.
Jennifer Stevens (Programming, Synth, Vocals) was classically trained on clarinet through the public school system. This opened up a new world for her, so she spent the next fourteen years teaching herself whatever she could get her hands on. She started seriously pursuing piano at the age of 9. She learned flute and guitar in high school and was very successful, even with no formal training. In effect, programming and using synthesizers came very naturally, and through Jerome's patients and her determination to seize this rare musical opportunity, she produced an entirely different mood and style for The Hollow's musical direction.
The Hollow has played at three venues in the Bakersfield area including The Mint, The Silver Fox and The Gate, and has a small but loyal fan base. Their first headlining show would have been on 7/28/08 at The Mint, but a robbery only two days before the scheduled performance left them with no gear. With extreme sadness and disappointment, the show was canceled. But this didn't stop them. They are still writing songs every day and are working hard to replace their stolen instruments. They are also happy to announce the release of their first two albums: The Hollow self-titled LP (online release 8/10/08) and The Hollow - II (online release 8/12/08), both of which received nearly 100 downloads in a 12 hour period. They are currently working on their third album, Triad.
