The Metaphor is a Malaysia-based band that plays brands of instrumental rock music. They are often compared and categorised under the sub-genre of “post-rock”. However, the band has managed to sound different from what has been commonly thought about of the band’s playing. Their progressive flow along with the balance of each instrument having to play its role perfectly has caught the attention ofmany who witnessed their performances or listened to their 5-track EP named ‘Preface’ which is published on May 2011.Consisting Tomas, Ling, Erik, Kelvin and Izzy, the band started out with the interest to do music in hopes of engaging listeners without having to convey stories using words, translating the band’s feelings from the first note until the final to an assortment of inventive tales. The band has forged an unbreakable bond among each other and also performed alongside with renowned bands in their local music scene like SevenCollar T-Shirt, This Will Kill Us All, Furniture, Deepset, and many others. Apart from that, the band was also invited for radio interviews and magazine features. Traxx FM commented that “it (Rebirth) contains the element of provoking one’s emotion”. Junk magazine took note of how “labels are for anal music journos and the unimaginative. The Metaphor checks all the post-rock boxes—no vocalist, sweeping soundscapes, intrinsic harmoniousness and a minimalist approach to their own star persona who can be that good without resting on the strength of references alone”.To crave their musical arts, they trusted their instincts, pushing their song crafts to the limit and meticulously perfecting them. Their songs take the audience to a spiral of musical journey where different heights of emotions drowning them in their own imaginations are experienced according to Erik. “It brings me a mix sensation of despair and hope. I feel like I am in a movie with a constant growth of peace and a sudden punch of angst. When I start playing those songs, they allow me to let loose.”Regarding their first debut EP, “I’d close my eyes and play them over and over again in my head,” Tomas said devotedly. “It (Rebirth) is one of the best musical pieces that we’ve ever done, in that each part shows each of our true self and what we like to play as musicians.” Tomas explains “who need words when music is not bound to the limitation of languages?”Everything sounds the way it does recorded or live because of the way they agreed on how it should sound. “I’d play melodies or just rhythms; not much of a solo instrumentalist,” said Ling who is a big fan of melodic ambience. “She is definitely a huge reason why we have this distinctive sound and we wouldn’t sound complete without her,” said Kelvin, the bassist of The Metaphor.“I’ve always wanted to play in a post-rock band. I could feel the music the first time I’ve heard them. They moved me and made it easier for me to be in the band,” said Izzy, the final ingredient to the recipe expressed who replaced Omar that first started out with the band.
