Them Hills is a band from Nevada City, California. The group is composed of singer/guitarist Dan Elkan, drummer David Torch, and bassist Thad Stoenner. Dan and Thad played together in Northern California bands Pocket for Corduroy and Black Bear in the late nineties. While Thad continued Black Bear and other musical projects based in Nevada City, Dan moved down to Sacramento and made two records (Masculine Drugs / Suicide Squeeze Records & Talk To Your Kids About Gangs / Skin Graft Records) as part of a collective he headed with Zach Hill (Hella, Team Sleep) called Holy Smokes. After spending a few years apart Thad and Dan began to conceptualize a group that would, with the addition of David (who had previously played with notable Reno bands, Crush Story and Vae Victis), eventually become Them Hills. When Dan returned from performing on tour with Hella (playing guitar, keyboards and singing) for the better part of 2005, Them Hills was ready to take shape. The band focused solely on songwriting with no intention of playing live until the material was fully realized, as to not have any outside feedback interfere with the process. Them Hills broke their silence with a handful of performances supporting The Advantage (5RC) on the west coast in the fall of 2006, and has since been performing regularly throughout California including spring 2007 west coast dates with The Thermals (Sub Pop). Them Hills sound as they should: an amalgamation of 60s/70s classics and 80s pop gems—heard over the radio while strapped in their car seats as children—torn apart by the first rock records they purchased on their own in the 90s, and smoothed over by the new or rediscovered underground albums they began obsessing over in high school and up through today. The debut Them Hills full length album, Greener Grassing was recorded over a couple weeks in the winter of 2007 at Brighton Sound, Sacramento, CA. Engineered by Dana Gumbiner (Golden Shoulders, Deathray) and produced by Zach Hill (Holy Smokes, Marnie Stern), the record will see a fall 2007 release.
