DJ workshops give new direction to teenage talents Thanks to Music4U, the Humber Youth Music Action Zone, the future looks bright for a young DJ It’s hard to imagine when you meant the confident and enthusiastic Richard Tipple from Grimsby, that just three and a half years ago he was on a Young Offenders Scheme with no clue what the future might hold for him. Today, thanks to Music4U – the Humber Region Youth Music Action Zone - the future looks bright for the young DJ. 19 year-old Richard took part in DJ workshops run for North East Lincolnshire Council whilst on the Young Offenders Scheme. The workshops, which still run today, are organised by the Arts Development Team of North East Lincolnshire Council as part of their Music4U programme in the region. ‘DJ Redlocz’, otherwise known as local musician David Okwesia, runs a weekly two-hour session in DJ skills. Taking part proved to be a turning point for Richard, whose own skills have progressed so far that he will soon be running workshops in his own right. “I love getting a crowd going”, Richard explains, who using his stage name DJ Tipztar, has also played gigs around the Humber region including appearing at the Grassroots and Urbanize Festivals as well as Grimsby nightspot Pier 39 and on BBC Radio Humberside. Richard is keen to point out the benefits of the Music4U workshops. “It’s has helped me grow up, kept me straight and sensible. Now I want to use what I’ve learnt to get other kids off the streets." The future looks promising for Richard. With the help of the Princes Trust he has secured grant funding for decks and other equipment to set him up as a DJ. He is aiming to run regular workshops soon in local Youth Clubs and is also planning to start a three-year Access to Music Creative Sound Production Course in which runs in the region. Steve Greenfield, Richard’s Princes Trust mentor, is impressed by the young-man’s achievements. “Richard is he’s not just a dreamer. He’s not looking to be the next big thing in Ibiza right away but looking to do a course and get the skills he needs to make a career out of music. It would be nice if he does make it big one day.” Dave Powers, Arts Development Officer for North East Lincolnshire Council also praises Richard’s attitude. “Richard has definitely got what it takes to build a future for himself through his DJ-ing. He has the right temperament and is determined. Other young people on the scheme have got good things out of the project but Richard is a real success story.” Dave plans to offer Richard shadowing opportunities on other local Music4U projects so he can build up his experience and use what he has learnt to help and inspire others. ..
