Music is our life’ isn’t just a phrase the contestants on X-Factor roll off the tongue every series, for us it’s actually true,” states Undercolour drummer Scott Jackson. “We’ve studied music at school, college and now at university - for all of us this is all we ever want to do; be a band, play shows and have people all across the world listen to our music.” Undercolour’s journey started in the musical melting pot of Manchester. Frontwoman Steff (19), guitarists Elliot (20) and Sam (19) and bassist Suthee (20), joining Scott (21) all met in 2007 at Manchester College where they collectively studied music performance and technology. It wasn't until early 2010 however that the band was formed - forged by friendship and bonded by a love of great music. After finishing college the band packed their bags and left their home city to move to Bristol where they attend Bristol Institute of Modern Music. About to start their second year, their musical qualifications are now racking up with most of the band now as high as Grade 8 in both theory and rockschool for their instruments. Speaking of the band frontwoman Steff says... “We’ve all been friends for years and we’ve all grown together as musicians. It's all we've ever wanted to be. We have a wide range of influences and I think that has helped us as a band. Elliot and Sam are very techincal guitarists and love heavier bands. Scott loves the more ‘indie’ side of music. I’d love for people to listen to us and think we sound like Undercolour rather than one specific band. I hope people don’t look at me and think we must be like Paramore simply because I’m a girl fronting a rock band.” Scott adds “We now all study at Bristol Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) which is where bands like The Kooks have learnt their trade. BIMM has been a fantastic experience for us and I’ve personally had drum lessons from the likes of James Hester - Malakai/Cars on Fire Drummer, Dom Greensmith - Reef Drummer and Steve Wright - Paul Weller’s Drummer, while Elliot and Sam have been taught by Jamie Hunt from Biomechanical.” With a feature as ‘Local Heroes’ in a September 2010 edition of Kerrang! magazine, Undercolour are now writing new material ahead of a new release in early 2011. Steff added: “Earlier this year we recorded four demos with Tim G (Sonic Boom 6, Random Hand) at Bigtone Studio, but we’re already back in the rehearsal rooms writing new material. We have lots of ideas that we cannot wait to get down on tape and share with the world.”
