Zambezi Drive was founded in Utrecht, the Netherlands by three friends, who go by the names of Jelmer, Piet and Maarten. They all play some instruments and decided during the year 2006 to join forces. Influenced by such bands as the Eels, Zita Swoon, dEUS, Tom Waits and so on, a loomy Saturday afternoon offered them the first few chords of a song later called “Kangaroo”. During the week following that Saturday, Maarten wrote some lyrics to the chords and called it “Carrot Root”. That was simply the vegetable the song was about. Maartens vocal articulation is rather poor, so Jelmer and Piet assumed he was singing about kangaroos. Maarten didn’t really care whether the song was about orange veggies eaten by bunnies or about the most huggable animal down under (oh well, the koala not taken into account). Eventually, a “Kangaroo” was born. A couple more songs were written and there were lots of fun. But…something was missing…because well, Piet was pushin’ the piano, Jelmer was humpin’ the bass and Maarten was rackin’ the guitar, but well, who was counting beats?? No one, it turned out after a quick discussion. So that was what they needed. The next few months were spent very much on a-searchin’ and a-lookin’ for a guy or girl who can play the drums. All three of them hoped very much for it to be a girl but sadly, it turned out to be a boy. His name: Tijmen. Despite his gender he is fully accepted by the rest of the boys and often swings harder than Bokito left out of its cage.
