About TJ Brown

Hazel Crest, IL

TJ, born on the south side of Chicago as Tanya Jenine Brown has also become known as the Soultress due to her unique blending of smooth jazz, blues & a sprinkle of neo soul. Not one to be placed in a box when it comes to her style of music, TJ demonstrates her diversity by singing about the reality of her life as only she can tell it through her lyrics. TJ takes you on a journey through her relationship experiences both good & bad along with everyday challenges including the economy & weeding through negativity to embrace the positive things in life. While feeling there is a lack of depth with some of the music on mainstream radio today; TJ is on a mission to carve out her own niche while gaining fans along the way with raw and pure sincerity. TJ began performing at the age 5 singing soul classics in front of family members. Upon impressing family, TJ joined the church choir and was soon named a feature soloist. With influences along the way that include Sarah Vaughan, Phyllis Hyman, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder & Smokey Robinson there was no question that TJ would pursue music as a full time career.

It was during session work for other artists that TJ truly realized her strength as both a writer and singer. With sacrifices along the way including trying to reach a greater audience as an independent artist not on a label, TJ is determined to show that you can have a successful career doing what you love to do. With songs from her new release “Afterthoughts From The Soultress” receiving critical acclaim both in the United States & overseas, TJ has realized that the momentum of her second album has already surpassed that of her first album titled “Love Design”. Looking through the mirror of past soul artists for inspiration, TJ injects a refreshing new twist on smooth jazz and soul that is tailored to her own unique sound. Live performance is a strong suit for TJ as she has performed with Rachelle Ferrell and Frank McComb in addition to hitting the stage at various venues with her band SoulElite. In 2012 expect a major impact including more great music from TJ and live performances across the U.S. and beyond. For updates, news and booking information visit TJ
