Valley football hero's younger brother aims for rock star glory by
Aaron Stephens isn’t worried about living in the shadow of his older brother, a living legend of Valley high school football. He’s much more interested in doing something great on his own. The singer-songwriter said the only pressure to compete with his sibling came from himself. “My parents never expected me to be like my brother,” Aaron said. “I felt like I had to do something great, and I’m slowly finding my thing and doing what I do.” Aaron’s brother is star running back Bradley Stephens, who is now a sophomore at Texas A&M University. The football player made headlines as an all-state running back at McAllen Memorial High School. At the end of his high school career, he rushed for 7,803 yards and his 113 career touchdowns are a Valley record. Named an All-American by Parade and USA Today, Bradley was a hard act to follow, their father Craig admits. “It would be hard for anybody growing up with the attention his brother received in high school,” said Craig Stephens, Aaron and Bradley’s father. “But Aaron and Bradley handled it very well. They were very close.” The brothers shared the same taste in music, and they used to frequent Valley concerts during their high school years. Bradley, 21, said that throughout their childhood, his brother worked his way through drums, piano and guitar. “He was really good at all of them. Music’s always been kind of this thing that has always come easy to him,” Bradley said in a phone interview. “It’s kind of funny. It seems like everybody in our family is kind of into different things.” Bradley is currently working on balancing school and football and is expecting to graduate after next spring. Aaron, 18, who attends Texas State University in San Marcos, is currently working on a demo, which he hopes to send to record companies. His music is a soulful mishmash of John Legend’s sultry vocals and John Mayer’s acoustic pop. The mass communications major began dabbling in music when he was 13 years old. As an adolescent, Aaron sang at church and performed in school plays. Craig said he recalls the nights when, after football practice, Aaron spent hours in his bedroom practicing on his guitar until the early morning. “He’s mostly done it on his own with the dedication and the passion that he has.” Aaron said he owes a lot of his inspiration to his Christian faith, his family and his own experiences. “If I’m going through something, I try to express how I feel through my songs.” Aaron counts Mat Kearney and legends Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye among his influences. “I like Motown music, which is a lot of my dad’s music,” Aaron said. Because he felt it was creative from a lyrical standpoint, Craig said he deliberately played Motown when driving the boys to school. “I always tell them that they don’t make songs like that anymore,” Craig said.
