AJ Scaff, Livingston, Montana
One Tuesday morning at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, tired of his plans of world dominating hegemony and based out of small western pacific island nation just off the coast of New jersey, Alex decided to take on music as more than just a hobby.
Ok, so the story maybe doesn't go that way but he, AJ Scaff, was born and raised in New Jersey eventually making his way to Montana to leave behind the hustle and bustle of the close proximity of NYC he knew. Always finding the quiet, wide open spaces more to his liking, this restless introvert became an everyman in the work-a-day world of woodworking until being drawn into the limelight at a community theater and from there, a bug awoke, under his skin since he was a kid when his Dad would sing along to Doowop songs, rockers and folkies alike in the car on the radio.
Influences for Alex are wide and diverse and all are made use to inspire his songs in sometimes hidden ways and reasons. The band name Escandar is Arabic meaning....Alexander. His family background is the unique mix of Lebanese and Irish and his parents were just as unique in their influence on him, his Mother being the artistic half and his Father the blue collar truck-driver, gave him insights into many facets of characters.
Some of the reasons for him taking up songwriting are that he simply got tired of the pablum being served up as "mainstream" fare on the radio and to give himself and audience members, new songs to play and listen to besides just cover tunes at shows. Being in the throws of switching from construction to musician, he plays in open mics and the infrequent gig with himself or friends as they pass through on their own little tours.
His sound is hard to pin down and so remains constantly in flux, possibly attributed to his ADD but made fully use of when writing songs. Writing being his first passion and music a real close second, it's the enjoyment that music can bring to himself and others that drives him to keep things on an uneven footing while remaining grounded in his search for the next inspiring moment.
He plays rhythm guitar and lead vocals while poking at other instruments. Picking up the guitar is more a default instrument for him having grown up admiring piano, it was the guitar that was much more portable and that so many songs he'd heard were played on. "Dust was recorded in Dean Andersons studio with Dean Anderson-piano, keys Lenny America- drums, and Eddie "T" tsuru-bass, Alex on vox and rhythm guitar, "Dust" - a dedication to Dr. Carl Sagan and the immensity of time, it became a #1 at Ourstage.com in June, while "Hey Julius" was recorded on his iMac/ garageband program with him doing everything on it thus far, it's only a rough sketch, this is a story about those that get out into the world and seek new adventures and is told from the point of view of one who didn't. "Hey Julius" was chosen to be part of a high school AV project as part of the soundtrack for a promo to Livingston, MT.
Besides the many local talented players, he's played with the founder and lead guitar player for "Men at Work" Ron Strickert and the actor Kevin Bacon.
His former project "Escandar" was #1 on Locist.com for many months.
He's been interviewed on terrestrial radio and in podcasts for these songs.
At this time AJ Scaff's project can be found at myspace with a forthcoming debut CD.
