What’s the difference between rap and hip-hop? This question has been long debated for the last 25 years….just ask any music artist today, odds are you’ll get a plethora of answers. There is a difference between Hip-Hop and Rap, just ask Jamaal Flowers, aka Caine, a lyricist and MC from Cleveland, Ohio.
“The difference between hip-hop and rap in my opinion is hip-hop is more of embracing the culture in other forms than just music. A rapper is someone who uses music to tell their story and view on life.”
Caine is one of the best unsigned artists in the Midwest. His sound is true to form, unique, and above all else pure talent.
Caine has become a force to reckon with in the music business with underground hits such as “Slo Money, Gangsta U Not, The Ghetto, and Heaven or Hell.” When asked to describe his art form, Caine replies “I’m more of a rapper because the majority of my music is based on personal life experiences.” Over the last seven years, Caine has had to deal friends getting locked up, murdered, and re-evaluating his music career.
“My best friend was in a rap group and was starting to get a nice buzz in the streets when he was murdered at the age of 23. I’ve seen it all in the streets of Cleveland. Like I said in The Ghetto, when you rich life clear, when you broke life’s a blur” meaning, that when you struggling the only thing you see is the hardships and pain cuz’ you livin it day by day. People that have never struggled can’t relate cuz’ they don’t know how it feels, they can only imagine. People that are from the Ghetto have it rough cuz’ it’s hard to get out of that mind-state and break free…You get hopeless when all you see around you is drug fiends, dope boys, poverty, and welfare. So my song, speaks to this. It talks about the pain of feeling hopeless, or having a drug-addicted parent, or not wanting to be a doctor cuz you never seen one that looks like you. the streets can feel my music”
Caine first appeared on the hip-hop scene in 2002 as a member of the rap trio “Young G’z.” The group severed ties in 2006, and Caine has been a solo artist ever since. During this time, he has had break-out performances that eventually led to him touring the country and performing in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles with hip-hop legends such as Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony, DMX, Lil Wayne, Chamillionaire, Bun B, Tech9ine etc. to name a few.
In the last few days, Caine has shot a video for his upcoming single, Slo Money. “The song speaks to the economic condition and struggles that we are facing living in the inner city. Sometimes we wait on other people to help us get out of our condition, but if the only thing you doing is sitting around talking, and then it don’t make any sense cuz that don’t pay the bills.”
“My inspiration in the game has come from influences like Tupac. He could spit on all levels and has left an imprint on the music industry that hasn’t been touched in years. His music was never watered down and commercialized, he kept it real.”
”Pac said he was “Gone spark the next great mind” I think he already has, listen to my songs, hip-hop can never die keep the music real!”
