Call them brothers in arms. Toronto-based band Fairchild comprise four brothers in their 20’s, and they’re united not just genetically but in a creative quest to create compelling modern rock.

These 4 brothers are definitely ready for prime time. Their debut single, “Dare To Believe,” made serious believers out of Canadian radio, getting added on MaxTrax Rock and Galaxie Rock out of the box, then charting on Rock Radio, Top 40 and Hot AC formats. The track fared superbly in showdown competitions, reigning supreme for four nights on K945 Moncton and for five on Z103.5’s “Head2Head. (the latter retired DTB as an exceptional “Hall Of Fame”’er!) Beating the likes of huge international buzz stars like Jamie Fox/ T-Pain, Mariah Carey, The Ting Tings, amongst others.

Jeff explains that Fairchild’s creative process involves “getting together, practicing, and coming up with riffs and ideas. The base of the song will come, then I’ll come up with a melody and lyrics around that. I base the songs on the emotion of the music that comes first, and my whole thing as a songwriter is to make emotions tangible.” Mission accomplished! As this is exactly what Fairchild has done in DTB, for example “I’ll Take You” the bands second single off the album is definitely one of many crowd-pleasers at Fairchild gigs, while Chad Kroeger of Nickelback (a key influence on the band) was reportedly observed enjoying the song at a recent showcase. The tight musicianship featured on this song and throughout Fairchild’s first album, Dare To Believe, should come as no surprise. You see, Fairchild is literally a band of brothers, comprising four siblings (Jeff, Phill, David and Donny Smith) in their 20s.

Over the past four years, the four brothers have played hundreds of gigs in Ontario schools, as part of a safe schools initiative sponsored by a non-profit organization, and now, with a brand new album do to be released in late 2010 they’re poised to take another major leap forward.

The Toronto-based band Fairchild comprise of four brothers all in their 20’s. over the past three years the brothers have been writing and playing hundreds of shows. Most where held in Ontario schools as part of a safe school initiative. Playing together for awhile the brothers have this great chemistry that is essential for a great career. The album Dare to Believe is in stores now. The album begins with “She Caught Me” an insanely catchy tune with a wave of guitars including a sweet solo, and a loud yet controlled drum beat. The vocals are nearly perfect sounding hitting every note with precision. “Take Me Away” continues down that same path with a superb track with amazing vocals and backing vocals. the range the Jeff has during the track. it doesn’t last long clocking in at a tick over 2 and a half minutes, but the entire track and will stick with you especially the spot around a minute forty. By track three “Hanging on the Line” you can start to feel the distinct sound of Fairchild. The modern crisp vibe that they give off will please almost any crowd. “Hanging on the Line” gives listeners a mixture of great vocals with serious range, a voice over, and great music that really gets you moving. “Don’t Say Goodbye,” the longest offering on the album, slows it down a bit with so much passion and emotion it could almost bring tears to your eyes. The vocals are so clear its like looking into ocean water on a perfect summer day. It will be a phenomenal track anywhere that it appears. “Long Road” opens with a nice loud drums kick and guitars soaring around. The vocals enter shortly after powering the track through. “Long Road” is more of a in your face, up front track with loads of sweet tunes flying around your head and into your ears. This track is a great on with flair and attitude. “I’ll Take You” offers listener even more attitude and some sex appeal for the ladies. The smooth voice of Jeff will draw them in and leave them wanting more. They make it seem so effortless in this track. “Bring it on Home” is yet another solid track on this wonderful album. This one seems to have a bit of a country style to the lyrics and vocals, yet the music oozes of modern rock. “Dare to Believe” the title track comes late on the album. it has a pretty long intro, but when it finally gets to the meat of the album its just a grand as the rest of the album. it has a lot of passion in the vocals, music, and the lyrics. It’s a wonderfully crafted and constructed song that will bring fans to their feet. The track has a bit of a Christian rock feel to it and would fit perfect into anyplace. “Can You Feel Me” gives you sped up the vocals as Jeff flies through most of the lyrics without missing a beat. The music is up beat with a great tempo for jumping up and down and really getting into the song. They close the album with the passionate and emotional offering “We Rise.” It includes a piano and a strong vocal set. It goes back to the Christian rock feel with every once of energy flowing through the words of the track. is from deep within the soul that this track comes and it’s a great ending to a great album. Overall this album is one of the best I have reviewed this year. They are solid from the first note to the last and will grab a hold of a strong fan base and keep them captivated. It would be ignorant not to take a listen to this band. I can see them going places and being so young is hard to imagine them not have a long and fantastic career. Four Toronto brothers join forces on their debut album [- Hide] Kerry Doole - Tandem (Online magazine) There is no shortage of brothers in rock ’n’ roll ... There is no shortage of brothers in rock ’n’ roll bands, but four? That is definitely exceptional. Often, large numbers of siblings in a musical group suggest a pop sound, like The Osmonds or Jackson Five, but the style of Toronto-based Fairchild is unequivocally modern alternative rock. Singer/guitarist/lyricist Jeff Smith acknowledges that people are constantly curious about a band of four brothers, and he candidly confesses “we’ve used that as a marketing tool.” When we get compared to Hanson or The Jonas Brothers, though, we quickly point out we’re nothing like them!” Fairchild are now ready to release their debut album, The Long Road. It is a very polished work, and reflects a diversity of musical influences within the band. “We are all big classic rock fans, so our roots come from the sound of that,” says Jeff. “In classic rock, I’m a big Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and U2 fan, while on today’s scene, we really like Nickelback, Hedley and Fall Out Boy. Our bass player David is the youngest, and he’s really influenced by the pop-punk genre. We try to update our style for it to fit in today. Joining Jeff Smith (he’s 28) in Fairchild are drummer Phill Smith (26), lead guitarist Donny (24) and David (20). Jeff says that decisions within the band are “sort of based on seniority. If Donny and Phill are arguing about something, I’ll make the final decision ‘cos I’m the oldest . We usually say that the pros of being brothers is that we can get pissed off at each other but just for five minutes. Blood is thicker than water that way, so there’s never any long-term tension between us.” Prior to all four brothers coming together as Fairchild comparatively recently, Jeff and Phill played together extensively in previous bands. Jeff jokes that “we came as a pair. You can’t have one without the other! Donny and David were too young at the time. They were like our roadies and groupies, and then it was ‘O.K., you’re cool enough to play with us now!” Jeff Smith is the primary songwriter in Fairchild, as he explains. “I’ll take care of most of the melodies and the lyrics, but as far as the production of the music, that is all from us working together. We’ll get together, practice and come up with riffs. The base of the song will come, then I’ll come up with a melody and lyrics around that. I base the song on the emotion of the music that comes first, and my whole thing as a songwriter is to make emotions tangible.” There is a range of emotions at play in Fairchild’s songs. Their album features haunting power ballad in the form of “Don’t Say Goodbye,” while the raunchy rock of “I’ll Take You” (“when I come, I deliver”) definitely shows a Nickelback influence. The album’s first single, “Dare To Believe” is already getting a positive response at rock radio, and the heartfelt tune has a positive message. Jeff Smith explains that “we weren’t sure if that song would even be on the album. It was one of the last ones written for the album last year. About a month before I had to start singing in the studio I lost my voice. An ear-throat specialist said it was nodules. I thought, ‘no, this can’t happen.’ I couldn’t sing and I was freaking out, but I went on natural remedies and it healed. The song came out of that experience - ‘Can I dare to believe that we’ll be able to continue doing this.’ So the verses are about the fear of what is going on. If people think it’s about a girl, no problem.” Other tracks show a love of wordplay, and Jeff Smith says he’s “a big fan of analogies and metaphors.” The Long Road is Fairchild’s first recording experience together, and they committed themselves fully to it. “We all said, ‘O.K., we’re brothers. Let’s do what we have to do, and put everything we have into it. Even if nothing comes of it, that way we can walk away with no regrets.” The Long Road is available via www.fairchildrocks.com.Fairchild play a CD release party at Revival on Feb. 6.
