2009 Review: UkMetalUnderground Unsigned by UkMetal Underground
Woah! Is this happening? A metalcore-sounding band, from Wales, and yet the cursor is staying securely away from the top right hand corner of the screen? This is very much unprecedented, and blimey! Unsigned? This is the kind of dominant, anthemic outfit which should have been whipping up a fury at Download this weekend! Just when you thought metalcore was safely six feet under, Fell On Black Days creep in through the cemetery gates and get out the shovel with the intention of indulging in a little graveyard theft- don’t be alarmed however, its all for a good cause, and I would highly recommend finding out for yourself just why! Fell On Black Days are worth ten of every one of those piss poor excuses of bands who committed the unforgivable atrocity of introducing the fringes into our Jerusalem, our sacred land of metal. I’m not quite sure what that X factor they possess is, but it puts them at a level way above their contemporaries, looking down on the Unearths, the Killswitch Engages, and maybe sometime in the not so distant future, seated next to the Lamb of Gods and Triviums, tapping into the wealth of the mainstream ‘metal’ audience. You can scoff, proclaim ‘false’, and ‘sell out’, but at the end of the day, the well crafted, modern might of a band like FOBD will keep the kvlt acts where they belong, lurking in the dark corners of obscurity, cursing under their breath about the un-‘trve’-ness of it all. Angular passages high five with the tight drums, launch into some Dimebag-inspired groove, and then race ahead with some big-four progressive thrash, and all the while, the lead guitar is busy setting fire to the fretboard with searing licks and blinding solos. Superb! Vocals are at a similarly high standard, conquering the ol’ clean/growled routine and mastering the art of the ‘sing along if you know the words!’ chorus (for an example, be sure to check… every song!), and like I said before, it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to see them playing large venues. A support slot with a ‘now’ band would undoubtedly lead to great things- in fact, this is the breed of band that RoadRunner shit themselves with excitement over; in my mind’s eye, I can already picture the Metal Hammer full page adverts and covermount CDs… Try as I might, I fail to find any criticisms with substantial conviction concerning FOBD. The song structures are quirky, quick paced, and yet still conventional, and the production is consistently solid and crunchy; these bloody Welsh have got all aspects of their sound nailed down! Maybe perhaps a few more individual touches and trademarks would do these guys well to help them form an even more distinctive sound, but for a shockingly still unsigned band, I can’t actually give you any advice, sorry! 8.5/10 PuddaWudda
