July already? When did that happen? Here we are summer in full swing, and once again Independence Day is upon us. Happy Birthday America, and to all those who have sacrificed their own way of life to allow me to celebrate with my loved ones... I Thank You!
Sometime in 2008 there I was at a local club seeing a local show (like I do) and there on the stage was a band that left me awe struck, which is not the norm. As they played and I stared, I found myself thinking where in the hell did these guys come from? When a band like that sears their name in my memory it is the natural progression for me to want to see them again and again. Recently I had the chance to catch Heroes Will Fall at Lyrica in Downtown Orlando and there I stood watching, listening... unequivocally impressed... which if you were to ask someone who knows me well, is a challenge within it’s own right.
In recent articles, some of you dedicated readers may have picked up on my partiality for the vocalist. Yes it’s true I do consider myself a vocal snob. The ability to use ones own vocal cords in such a way that it will cause another person to feel passion, fear, rage, angst, joy, love, hate; is a remarkable gift in my opinion. When a vocalist has the ability to make me feel exactly what they feel when they perform a song is a talent that not only gains my respect, it turns me into a fan for life. From my viewpoint that task is much more difficult for the vocalist than any other musician. Such is the case with the melodic abilities of Heroes Will Fall vocalist Justin Peyatt who is has infused Howard Jones/Phil Anselmo/Randy Blythe on the heavy side of his screams and growls and a Brandon Boyd/Arron Lewis/Stephen Richards mix of clean vocals. With catchy harmonies and melodies that stick in my head throughout the day, quickly Justin has vaulted himself into my top ten favorite local vocalists.
Heroes Will Fall offers the listener a dynamic volley between bass and guitar, which for me personally stands out within our community of local bands here in Central Florida. Chris Kokkinos on bass is a fireball of intensity, not only with his playing style but with his stage presence. Brutally Chris’ fingers pounce on the strings of his bass as he is clearly the pace setter for the headbanging of a crowd. Fervently evident in songs like ‘Ad Nauseum’ the playing style that Chris exudes is meaningful and determined, almost as if he conjures a side of himself he might not show without a bass in hand.
Mike Allison on Guitar skillfully assaults his axe with thoughtful precision, with quality abilities that remind me of Clint Lowery of Sevendust. All too often talented guitarists have an air of audacity about them both on and off stage, such is not the case for Mike who obviously sets himself up as an integral member of Heroes Will Fall and not one of those types of guitarists who like to steal the spotlight for only themselves, and that gains one more nod of respect earned from me to HWF.
On their third drummer Heroes Will Fall were plagued with the drummer curse that many bands have experienced and are still experiencing. Fortunately this curse was a good thing, because with the addition of the heavy handed (and footed) style of Fred Rabideau, Heroes Will Fall now have a stronger foundation to build upon. Rabideau on drums takes your beating heart and forces it to pump on his command, masterfully utilizing his kit as a make shift defibrillator. Providing rhythmic sustenance,
Fred Rabideau’s style is all encompassing and brings a new power to Heroes Will Fall.
I dislike placing a label on a band I have the pleasure of doing a write up for, it is quite limiting, yet to help you the reader understand their style it’s a necessary evil, with that said... Heroes Will Fall provides a sound that is both heavy and intense in a familiar Killswitch Engage/ Lamb Of God style all the while not conforming to some standard of what the next wave of American Metal/Metalcore deems is “in”. I asked the members of HWF to define their sound and they said : “ We’re a rock-metal hybrid.” They also added: “With each new song that we write, we just try to utilize ideas that we haven’t used in our other songs. It helps keep things interesting and prevents us from writing songs that sound like different variations of one main idea or style.” That in itself is an important task in my opinion, all to often bands just mass produce the same song over and over again.
To remain on my MP3 player a band has to have that exact creative longevity. Last month I added ‘The Red Chapter’ by Heroes Will Fall to my music arsenal, which FYI is available on Amazon.com and iTunes. Admittedly the more I listen to it the more I appreciate it, realizing that The Red Chapter will stay on my favorite list for years to come. An official CD Release Party has been tentatively set for August 7th, 2010 at The Haven, so keep your eyes open for more details!

Made up of Justin Peyatt (Vocals), Mike Allison (Guitar) and Fred Rabideau (Drums) they are a fresh new Metal band that makes my head shake like those bob-head dolls on the dashboard of a weirdo’s car, keeping rhythm on my office table and pulling my face as if I just escaped from prison. They have an “exciting blend of hard rock that flies seamlessly between metal, hardcore, and tasteful pockets of melody” (I decided to quote this off their facebook page, as there is no way to better describe it).

They were so kind to send me their debut album “The Red Chapter” released in 2010, I have not stopped listening to it. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea but if you listen to Hardcore, Metal…MetalCore, anything along those lines, you will most definitely find something you love about them and the more you listen to them, the more you will want to. If I had to describe what I hear when I listen to them I would say; Perfect construction of vocals with epic drums, guitars and of course a melody that would get you hooked almost instantly. If you like the feel of Haste The Day, August Burns Red, and Silent Civilian, then this is most likely something for you too. This is most definitely one of the best new bands out there.
They are currently working on some new songs and if I am not mistaken, they are looking for a bassist. They did put a little sneak peak on their facebook page, recorded while in practice and I think it is splendid. If that is any indication of what is to come….let me tell you now and let me tell you honestly…WATCH THIS SPACE!!
