KINGS OF SPADE dish out a raw and grungey blend of urban funk, dirty blues, deep soul and rock. Don't let the tattooed arms or florescent mohawk of lead singer, Kasi Nunes, fool you. Kasi's whaling vocals are fiery, passionate, and a unique hybrid of soul queens Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin. Proud of not being boxed in a specific genre, the KINGS can remind you of a classic fist-pumping rock band in one number, take you for a dance-pop ride in the next, and then charge straight into an old smokey blues riff. Their shameless dancing, foot-stomping, and highly energetic live show has landed them gigs at LA's House of Blues, The Avalon, and The Viper Room, as well opening for world-famous acts like Bon Jovi, Daughtry, Mutemath, Everclear, Kings X and the Deftones. Their song “Boys In The Band” is featured on the film soundtrack for the Warner Brother’s released “Utopian Society.” In 2012 KOS kicked off a cross-country tour at the Autumn Lights Festival in Los Angeles capturing fans in Arizona, Austin, Boston, Vermont, and New York. They played an extensive 22 show US Mainland Tour in March 2013 which included a performance on Good Morning Austin on Fox 7 news several showcases at the theRedGorilla Music Festival, the Dirty Dog, Blind Pig Rooftop Stage, and the Texas Rockfest Stage in Austin . They just finished recording their 2nd studio album in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb (Rival Sons, Shooter Jennings), with a release date set for February 14, 2014. "San Antone" the second track off of the new album has already been licensed to an upcoming major motion picture. Kings of Spade will launch a 20-city US Mainland tour in support of the new album in March 2014.

When X-Factor left Hawaii for the mainland two years ago, most people thought that was it for Kasi "Rebel Girl" Nunes and her band. Normally, musicians decide to move in search of better opportunities. The only reason they'll return is to regroup after failing, or to show family and friends how successful they've become before returning to that big rock across the Pacific Ocean. KINGS OF SPADE CD RELEASE PARTY Place: Ong King Arts Center, 184 N. King St. Time: 9 p.m. Friday Cover: $10 That logic doesn't compute for X-Factor, who moved back to Oahu last month after a successful stint in Hollywood. Now known as Kings of Spade, the four-piece band gigged regularly at well-known venues like the Viper Room and House of Blues in addition to recording their first full-length studio album. Nunes and her crew will celebrate the release of "Crave" this weekend with a show at Ong King that serves as both a homecoming party for the band and an opportunity to unveil their new album (see John Berger's "Island Mele" review). Kings of Spade will be joined on stage by openers Paula Fuga, Jammarek, Family Dinner, Natalie Phoenix and DJ H.O.P. AFTER STARTING OUT as a party promoter five years ago, Nunes decided to form a band in order to fulfill her dreams of performing in front of a crowd. I never used to consider myself a singer," she said earlier this week. "I thought I was an entertainer. Her desire to improve as a vocalist was one of the primary reasons the band decided to move in 2006. Nunes realized that the only way to learn more about the mainstream music business was to be where the action was, and that meant moving to Los Angeles. All we did in L.A. was play music," Nunes said. "The first few months were really rough, until we got stable and got cars so we could get to gigs. Nunes and bandmates Jesse Savio and Matt Kato all lived together in the shadow of the famous Hollywood sign, taking various jobs to help pay for rent and studio time. "We were there for four months before he showed up. We thought, 'He wouldn't do this to us,' but he did. But a few months before they moved back to Hawaii, he left the band once again. So when she got home, Nunes set out to find a replacement. She found one in Tim Lee, a musician old enough to be her father. He's, like, Hawaii's best-kept secret," Nunes said. "We're lucky he's willing to play with us. New additions at live gigs include DJ H.O.P. alongside a keyboard player and horn section; Nunes also hopes to find a harmonica player to join them at Ong King. Why the name change? According to Nunes, it was to eliminate any confusion after a band with the same name won a European version of "American Idol" a few years back. Lead singer Leona Lewis has since broken out as a solo artist in the United States, adding to the possibility that fans could get confused. We didn't find out until after we were on the mainland," said Nunes. "And we didn't want to have anything to do with Europe's 'American Idol' winners. The switch also appeased her bandmates, who thought the old name didn't accurately portray their blues/rock/funk sound. With a mix of "Stevie Ray Vaughan's dirty blues guitar stylings, crossed with Janis Joplin or Aretha Franklin on vocals," they hope to continue with a sound that found them success on the mainland. In a scene currently saturated with indie rock, Kings of Spade was a breath of fresh air among Hollywood booking agents. But despite the increased support, Nunes is confident she made the right decision by returning home. Along with being closer to the ocean and her family in Waianae, she said the talent pool of local bands is actually much better than Hollywood's. On the mainland, there's just so many bands coming from everywhere and so many of them just want to play," she said. "So there's a lot of bands that will play for free, and then the talent drops. Bands that thought they were good up there, wouldn't even get gigs down here ... there's a major difference in talent, I think. Following this weekend's party, Kings of Spade will continue their push for airplay on both local and mainland radio stations. Nunes also said she hopes to parlay the contacts she made over the last two years into a opening slot on the 2009 summer festival circuit. We've already started submitting (our music) to promoters," she said. "We didn't even understand stuff like that until we went (to Hollywood). Even if they don't get picked up to open for a big-name act, Nunes is confident Kings of Spade will find a way to headline their own summer tour. With so much time and effort invested into "Crave," she's adamant about getting back on the road and winning over new fans. I've never been proud of our recorded music, but I'm extremely proud of this album," said Nunes. "I'm happy to play it for anybody and I don't have to make any excuses. I stand by everything (that we decided to put) on that album.

The name change was one of those things just waiting to happen, as Nunes and Savio explain, there were just too many other things with that name and they didn’t want to run into licensing problems. So after heading to L.A. two years ago to get a taste of the music scene in broader scope and to record their newly released album, the group was daunted with the difficult task of finding the perfect name. Nunes jokes that she wanted Queens of Spade but the guys wouldn’t budge. After tossing around a bunch of names, Kings of Spade seemed to be the most fitting choice. If you look up the word spade it means to speak bluntly or plainly, and to call something out just as it is,“says Nunes, who grew up in Waianae and attended Kamehameha Schools.“So the mastery of that idea is what I agree with.” Just back from their two-year stint in L.A., they all agree that it’s good to be home.As Kato, a home-grown Kaneohe boy, puts it,“We just want to cruise here for a while and play, and if something comes up on the Mainland, then we’ll go.” Coming up for the group is a welcome home/CD release concert 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Ong King. Joining them on stage are Paula Fuga, Jamarek, Family Dinner, DJ Hop, Giinko Marischino, Nathalie Phoenix, Ujena Johnson, Erin McCollough and Dark. Jesse: My favorite is the song Move On. Kasi: Crave. Matt: Yeah I like Crave and probably the Funk song. Kings of Spade: Kasi Nunes, Matt Kato and Jesse Savio What is it that you love about music? Matt: I didn’t play drums to just play in a band. I just did it because it was fun. I just played on textbooks and liked it. But then we did open mic, and then I met these guys,and it just kind of developed. The best part was when we first started playing at Sand Island and we would just cruise and play. I feel that was the best times and when the best music came out. It was just having fun and playing music. Jesse: Music, for me, was like the only thing I was ever good at. I played drums since, like, the third grade, but it was boring. But my sister gave me a guitar when I was 14 and was, like,‘you need to play this.’ As a teenager you have all these feelings wrapped up in you, and I would sit there and really feel that.And at the end of that you would feel better. So I started playing guitar and writing songs.And then I played for an audience for the first time, and that was the first time I ever felt connected to people. For me, being up in front of a lot of people who are very happy takes me to another level of consciousness. Kasi: Growing up I had a lot of anxiety, and I just had to channel it out somehow and some way. My songs and my lyrics are something that had to come out, and this has been the best way. Whom do you credit for your musical talents? Jesse: My main No. 1 is my sister. She got me started with guitar, and she got her friends to teach me how to play.And then she moved me out to Hawaii,which is how this thing got started. Kasi: My mom played Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin when I grew up, and she would sing around the house. And she still kills it, too. She would win all these karaoke contests and stuff. I was always in awe of her singing ability. It’s just something she happens to be really good at. But I know her listening to old school soul and stuff has been the biggest musical influence on me. Matt: Probably, like, the bands I used to listen to in high school. A lot of the old school music like Zeppelin. I loved the guitar solos and the blues solos, and I really started to love music. I really like instrumental kind of music. I’ve gotta give credit to all the Hawaii bands I played with since I was 18. It was just such a great learning experience just playing with them. What three words best describe who you are? Kasi: Ambitious, passionate and sincere Jesse: Conscious, passionate and paranoid Matt: Hard-headed, carefree and real

Kings of Spade sets stage alight for Bon Jovi by Honolulu Advertiser
Local rock band Kings of Spade got its 15 minutes (actually, more like 30) of the big time last week when it opened for Bon Jovi. The band, which bills itself as funk, soul, blues and rock fusion, beat out more than 50 other local bands in a sort of battle-of-the-bands to land the opening gig. With frontwoman Kasi Nunes, who's got this incredible magnetism that lights up the stage — even a big stage like the Blaisdell's — the Kings gave local music a good name with a short, strong set that included a seriously solid rendition of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart. Between songs, Nunes held up an old, worn poster of Bon Jovi lead singer Jon Bon Jovi and said that the poster has been hanging over her bed since she was 15. In school," she said, "They used to call me 'Bon Jovi Jr.' " — a shameless admission of her love for the New Jersey rockers, and proof that sometimes, dreams do come true. One final note on The BeachBoys, who played three concerts in the Islands last week. Mike Love, co-founder of the band, said school loyalty still rings true to him and talked about rooting only for his nephew, Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves, when it comes to the NBA. I have a basic attitude that I prefer college and high school sports,"Love said. "There's more 'Be True to Your School' there, which is one of our bigger hits. I'm more into the spirit kind of things. Even though college is not exactly pure as the driven snow, it's closer to the spirit of when you went to high school and you were true to your team. For a limited time, Jason Alexander — George Costanza of "Seinfeld" fame — will be headlining "The Donny Clay Experience" in Las Vegas at the CHI Showroom at Planet Hollywood Resort &Casino. Tickets are $55 to $90 and can be purchased through www.ticketmaster.com. Alexander's character, Donny Clay, is billed as the world's fourth-best motivational speaker. Alexander performs most weekends through March 14.

This Halloween, Hallowbaloo in Chinatown was definitely the place to be. Not only were there amazing dancing performances by groups like The Shakti Dance Movement and Cherry Blossom Cabaret, but it featured fantastic bands like the increasingly popular Kings of Spade. Local artists Kings of Spade have been growing a following of loyal fans since first coming together roughly a year ago, finalizing their full band with the addition of bassist Max Benoit. The other members consist of Kasi Nunes on vocals, Jesse Savio on guitar, Matt Kato on drums, and DJ A2Z, aka Mike Morgan, on turntables. They have opened for mega-bands like Bon Jovi, Chris Daughtry, and Mutemath. Now, it is their turn to take center stage - in Chinatown and in the hearts of Hawaiʻi's people. Last Saturday, on the night before Halloween, Kings of Spade took the stage at 9:30 p.m., following up behind the reggae band Ooklah the Moc and finishing off that night's Hallowbaloo musical festivities on a fun, frenetic note. They showed up on stage playfully dressed as a band of Indians, with lead singer Kasi renegading as a cowboy and bassist Max in a somewhat revealing loincloth that was at constant peril of the winds. The crowd was thrilled to see them, cheering wildly at the very start of their performance. With such talented artists on stage, it’d have been hard not to share in their enthusiasm. It is difficult for me to find the words to describe just how spectacular this band is. The combination of Matt on drums and Max's booming bass produces a beat that reverberates down to your bones, forcing your body to flail about in absurd styles of dancing. Kasi’s vocals, altering between the rough grate of rock and the sweet crooning of jazz, adds soul and meaning to the music, as she reaches out and exudes charisma to her listeners, tantalizing their ears and drawing them in. Jesse’s guitar nicely compliments this eclectic mixture of melody, weaving in and out and sometimes stealing the spotlight of a song, while DJ A2Z’s fingers spit out synthesized sounds to smooth it all together and deliver it full and complete in a perfectly bundled package. But more than the music, it's the energy and personality of this band that I love the most. They have a way of pumping up their listeners and exciting the crowd, feeding off the energy and doubling it back to their fans. Even more than that, this band is special for the way they are always reaching out to their admirers and really getting to know them, whether it’s by mingling with the audience before and after shows or talking to their fans and being personable over Facebook, they always make that extra effort to let their following know that they’re more than just their supporters, they’re their friends. As Kasi said on Facebook, “We play for PEOPLE. The energy back from the crowd is the other half of our music. … We like to be friends with our supporters too, so really our friends come… not ‘fans’.” With the appreciation they show their devotees, and the talent and style with which they grace the stage, it is clear to see why Hawaii is losing its hearts to the Kings of Spade.

Ever been to see a band where the music is so good that the rhythm, as Urban Dictionary says, “starts from your toes (which are in your socks) and works its way up”? I’ve been looking for an excuse to write about Kings of Spade for about a year now. There’s already so much written about them, and so much has been said. But since they’re one of my all-time favorite local bands, if not my #1 favorite, and since Wednesday’s Broadcast at NextDoor, I feel like I should add to the multitudes of praise. If you haven’t been to Broadcast yet, it’s a weekly live music night, with various local (and sometimes visiting) bands who get a chance to both play and be filmed while playing. Just about every local band has been featured at Broadcast, but it takes some heavy hitters like Kings of Spade (among the various achievements to their credit, they’ve opened for Bon Jovi) to crowd the venue.Every time I see them play, I’m amazed again by how much individual talent each band member has, and how much working together allows them to showcase that talent. And they’re one of the only bands I know where all the members, from drummer Matt Kato to bassist Max Benoit to lead guitarist Jesse Savio, pretty much have their own set of groupies, drawn to the different personalities that make up this synergistic and explosively charismatic group of performers. As lead singer Kasi Nunes says, they’re not just a band; they’re a family. A damned good-looking, really talented family. Kings of Spade is an act I’ll never get tired of watching. I can’t even remember when I started going to their shows; I know it was several months after they came back to the Islands from LA and started performing again. Unanimous word on the street was “you need to check out their show,” so I did, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Their Wednesday show, with Taimane Gardner and Sex Puppets, was a rare treat for those who came out. We got to see Taimane, who’s a virtuoso on the ukulele and an absolute marvel to watch, give a brilliant, theatrical performance. She later took the stage with Kings of Spade for a spirited collaboration that got the instant approval of the crowd. Thanks Broadcast, Taimane, Kings of Spade and Sex Puppets for another memorable night of local music with some truly talented frontwomen!
