LOVEHATETHING competes in national 'Reprise Rivalr by By Rachel Bryson The Record Herald
eencastle, Pa. — A local band is hoping to win a national competition and endorsement from four well-known equipment brands for a year. LOVEHATETHING has rocked their way to the top of a list of more than 600 bands in the “Reprise Rivalry” competition and is counting on the community to propel them all the way to the finish. Winning could drive band members Ryan Eshleman, Sean Clever and Matt P. Cole from Greencastle and Chambersburg into full-time music careers. Eshleman, 29, plays bass guitar and sings lead vocals. Clever, 33, plays the guitar and sings. Cole, 33, plays drums and provides backup vocals. The competition LOVEHATETHING is one of the top finalists in the competition by Marshall, VOX, Korg and Lag — four equipment brands that will endorse the winner of the competition for a year. The first round of the competition began in July where each band received online votes for a submitted song. The top bands have been selected and have received a $400 equipment pack to remix or reprise the song they submitted in the first round. “You have to get the most downloads,” Eshleman said, adding the final stage lasts for one month. The band is currently in first place with its song, “Exit Game.” Voting ends Friday, Oct. 22. To vote, go to www.repriserivalry.sonicbids.com to download the free remixed version of “Exit Game.” The band started the competition in the end of July and credits some of their early success to Facebook and other social networking sites. Life-changing Eshleman added the endorsements make this competition a must-win. “It’s huge,” Cole said. “This could be a giant stepping stone,” Clever added. Endorsements from the four equipment providers would go a long way in getting LOVEHATETHING to open for well-known bands. “If you try to book with a national band, they want to know your credentials,” Eshleman said. “We all work full time,” Eshleman said, adding the band’s dream is to play music for a living. “It takes enormous dedication. We have to make time to do this,” Clever said. “We are now starting to see the fruits of our labor.” Winning the contest will also help with the music scene in Franklin County, Eshleman said. “It’s important to help build the local music scene,” Clever added. “To keep the artistic vision alive.” The band LOVEHATETHING was formed in 2009, and began booking gigs in bars and at benefits, car shows and festivals. They have released their first album, “The Disco Killer,” with the help of Jarred Cannon, serving as engineer. The band completed the 10 song CD in just eight days. GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Mechanic, car salesman and chef by day — rock musicians by night. Three local men are hoping to take their passion for music to the next level by winning a national band competition. Out of 600 bands of all genres entered from across the country, Greencastle-based LOVEHATETHING occupies the top spot in the Korg USA’s Reprise Rivalry contest. The band, formed just more than a year ago by longtime friends Ryan Eshleman, 29, Sean Clever, 33, and Matthew P. Cole, 33, is asking for local support to help them secure the grand prize of more than $5,000 in music gear and a year of artist endorsement from music instrument companies Korg, Marshall, Lag and VOX. While LOVEHATETHING is a fairly new creation, the trio says music has been a part of their lives for as long as they can remember. Clever, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, said he grew up listening to Patsy Cline tunes his mom played while she was cleaning house. Several family members were into playing bluegrass, he said. “They were always pickin’ and grinnin,’” Clever said. LOVEHATETHING drummer Cole, said he, too, was influenced by music at an early age and originally wanted to become a blues guitarist. In grade school, he picked up the drums instead. “I can’t think of anything else I’ve ever wanted to do other than play music,” Cole said. Vocalist and bassist Eshleman said he was influenced by his father, a choral director, and his older brother, with whom he played in his first band. “I was just surrounded by music growing up,” Eshleman said. While each one of the band members says he was influenced by a diverse range of musical tastes, they gravitated toward rock and roll. “I was listening to hillbilly music and the next thing you know it was Guns N’ Roses,” Clever said, laughing. Clever and Cole have played together for nearly 19 years. Last year, after hearing Eshleman sing with another band, Clever approached him about picking up a bass to join him and Cole to start a new band. Two days later, the hard rock trio was formed, Clever said. The band focuses on original music, but their shows are a mix of their own music and cover tunes, Clever said. The ultimate goal is to play music full time, Clever said. But until then, they work 50 to 60 hours a week at their day jobs, practice several nights a week and play gigs on the weekends. “We pretty much live normal lives during the week, but we still find time to hone our craft,” Cole said. “We work pretty insane hours to pay the bills. Sleep, that’s where we sacrifice.” All the money the band makes is rolled back into equipment, promotional materials, recording time and filming music videos.
