From the Choir to R&B by
Marcus Cox says he was singing when he was just 7 years old. Back then, he sang in the church choir. No one knew that the little boy could belt out a hymn until many years later when he was a teenager. That day, he was given the chance to sing a solo. “I used to sing to myself. I ain't never tell nobody,” he said, with a laugh. “I sang in the choir, but I never brought it out until my 11th grade year, and I bust out a solo in the choir stand. Everyone went crazy and was like, 'Where was you hiding that voice at?' ” “I knew by my 12th grade year in school,” he said. “As I continued to sing, people would tell me, 'Man you can go somewhere with that.' ” These days, the 24-year-old R&B artist is pursuing his music career and working full time as a program leader at the Boys & Girls Club. Even the kids in program are rooting for Cox's success. “They ask me all the time, 'Mr. Cox, when's your song going to be on Foxy 99? I can't wait to hear that,' ” he said. Weekender:How would you describe your musical style? Cox: My style is a mixture of a lot of new artists, like Usher and John Legend sometimes. And I can really say I'm versatile. I can switch up at any time, and I might not sound the same on every track. Weekender:Did you have any musical influences growing up? Cox: I never had time to listen to the radio, so it was just me enclosed to myself. It was just me and my own voice. I never really listened to nobody or had that idol. As I continued on through high school, it was people like Jamie Foxx that I listened to. Then in my college years it was John Legend and then Usher. So those are the main three. Weekender:Are you working on your debut album? Cox: Yeah, I'm working on one now. It should be done by the end of the summer. I thought of a few names for it. I want to say I'll call it, “Marcus Cox: Versatile” to show the versatility. I can sing from more than one genre. Weekender: What singles will we hear first from the album? Cox:I got two singles. One called “She's Gone.” That's a breakup song that's a part of my life story. And then there's “AEIO Ooh.” It's a love song. And that's 'AEIOU,' but 'Ooh.' Because when you hear it, it's like 'ooh!'(laughs) Weekender:What do you hope your listeners will take away from your music? Cox:I want them to sense my energy. As soon as they hear my voice on the microphone, something in their stomachs should flip and say, “Aww man, this guy is off the charts!” I want to touch people with my voice. I have a heavy voice. Oftentimes, I don't have to even sing with the microphone.
