Review: Philadelphia Slick Oil by The Round Table
Are you a fan of The Roots? If so, then you’re pretty much a Philadelphia Slick fan by default. While the group is very similar in design, a live band lead by a wicked emcee (Noesis), they’re not just some cheap knock off trying to ride coattails. Philadelphia Slick is looking to push the limits musicality by mixing smooth rhymes in their own right.

Music is a journey and for the past five years, local hip-hop band, Philadelphia Slick has blazed an impressive path. From early acclaim and recognition that included a 2007 Philly Car Share Sound Clash win, a 2008 Philadelphia City Paper Reader's Choice title as well as more recent praise from this site, Philly Slick has succeeded by staying away from formulas and making genuinely interesting music. In a genre that has become increasingly devoid of artistry and substance, Philly Slick's dynamic production and complex, socially conscience lyrics have made them a staple among the city's hip hop heads and earned them a host of fans up and down the East Coast. Five years is practically forever in music, and keeping an indie hip-hop band going for that long is definitely deserving of praise. While the group is focused on looking forward, they're also taking time to celebrate this important milestone. On May 14, the group will be kicking off nine city tour in Burlington, Vermont. Making their way down the coast, Slick will be back in Philly on May 22nd to celebrate not only their five year anniversary, but also the release of their latest work, Everything's Game. The Everything's Game EP is certainly an impressive entry to Philly Slick's catalogue. Weighing in at only six tracks and just under 20 minutes long, it's by far the most concise release in Philly Slick's career. Still, what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in content; there's not a wasted second among the EP's six songs. Also, the group recorded this one at soul legend Bobby Eli's Studio E, and the difference in sound quality between Everything's Game and their last album, Oil, is readily apparent. The EP will be available on Philly Slick's website starting May 14th. You can also grab a copy when Philly Slick hits the Blockley Pourhouse on Saturday, May 22nd.

Philadelphia Slick: Everything Must Go by Stereo Subversion
Following up their last fantastic effort, Oil, Philadelphia Slick has released a new EP, Everything’s Game, and judging by the merits of “Everything Must Go,” it’s just as good, if not better. A noodling organ line and a simple drum rhythm (from actual instruments rather than a turntable) make it a good track, while the rap makes it a great one. The flow is smooth, the references are clever,intelligent, and occasionally funny, and the rhymes roll like a phat Philly blunt. Beyond that, the song is a biting criticism of our modern consumer culture that continues the fine tradition of rap as social commentary. In other words, if anything does, Philadelphia Slick’s underground hip hop deserves to be brought above ground and appreciated for the musical art that it is.

Ahhhh yeahhhh…. I spend so much time being underwhelmed by hip-hop that when a rap jam drops this fresh and is so instantly lovable it is like a gift from above. I have been selfishly jamming to this beat nugget for the past two weeks and I think it’s time to share the love! Philadelphia Slick are from you guessed it and blend their hip hop with jazz, funk, soul and whatever else they feel will make the music rock. “Everything Must Go” features a crisp beat and twinkling electronics wrapped around funny verses about the ridiculousness of consumer culture. Nobody is acting hard and nobody is taking themselves too seriously. These guys are just having fun and that’s exactly how I like it. In addition two two LPS, their Everything’s Game EP is their most recent effort and is out now with 5 more popping hip-hop jams.
