Brooks Maguire is a Maui based singer/songwriter/guitarist born and raised in Texas/Louisiana that began his career in the mid-70's influenced by the likes of Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther as well as bands like the Eagles and Little Feat, along with the myriad of influences that the Gulf Coast has long been known for, i.e. Blues, Rock, Soul, Country, Gospel and Folk. He honed his talents in Austin in the late 70's and traveled throughout Texas/Louisiana spending a short period in Lake Charles LA where he was one of the founding members of KOKOMO, a vocal trio that returned to Texas and performed around the Houston/Galveston area. After KOKOMO's breakup in 1981, he showcased his versatility and engaging performance with the Brooks Maguire Band playing some of the top venues in the Houston area until being seriously injured in an auto/pedestrian accident in early 1984. After a miraculous recovery, Brooks returned to performing in mid '85 as a solo artist in small clubs/restaurants joining forces with gifted guitarist, Wayne Wilkerson, fondly known as the SHORT MAN HAWAIIAN SHIRT BAND. It was during this time, Brooks became attracted to the Hawaiian Islands. Deciding to move to Maui in late '87, Brooks quickly became a regular performer on Maui's world renowned Front Street in historic Lahaina. It wasn't long before Brooks was performing throughout the islands in many of the well known clubs/restaurants of Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Big Island. 1994 brought the release his first original CD, "Dream Of A Girl" that featured Grammy winning guitarist, Barry Flanagan of HAPA along with some of Maui's finest musicians. Brooks' song, "I Wanna Dance Like That" received recognition in the Annual Billboard Magazine Songwriter's Contest along with airplay on stations across the U.S.
Brooks' 2nd CD, "Pieces of a Dream", released in 1999 after returning to Texas to record with a group of musicians and songwriters that he had performed with prior to moving to Maui. His song, "Kula Morning", along with the singles, "Little Lies" and "No Good in Goodbye" written by his friend, David Chace received airplay in Hawaii and on the mainland.
In January/February of 2014, Brooks recorded his newly released CD, "The Road I Never Chose" with singer/songwriter/producer, Joe Beck in Nashville after signing a recording deaI with A.C.T Music Group - Nashville. Joe Beck has had nearly 80 hit songs and over 780 major cuts in all markets, including Adult Contemporary, Rock, Country, Inspirational, Southern Gospel and Black Gospel. Beck has contributed to six Grammy-nominated projects and has been nominated a dozen times for Dove Awards! Brooks and Joe Beck collaborated on half of the songs on creating such tunes as "Maui", "Land of Regrets", "A MIllion Steps Ago", "Maddie & Gray" and "WIde Open". Brooks recorded this latest CD with the help of Will McFarlane on guitar/slide. Former Bonnie Raitt guitarist, McFarlane left Raitt to move to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, playing on records for Bobby Blue Bland, Little Milton, Etta James, Johnnie Taylor and MANY others as part of the famed Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Brooks also had the privilege of having Andrea Merritt (known as Drea Rhenne' - backup vocalist for Michael McDonald) and Wendy Moten (both recently toured with Kathy Mattea) singing background vocals. "The Road I Never Chose" also includes Steve Brewster on drums and Duncan Mullins playing bass, both of whom have played with everyone from Amy Grant, Kenny Loggins, Paul Simon, Richard Marx, Kenny Rogers and literally hundreds of other legendary artists records/tours! Two-time winner of the Academy of Country Music’s top piano/keyboard player award, Gordon Mote, plays piano on Brooks' latest album. Mote has recorded with Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Gaither Vocal Band as well as many other artists. Brooks' latest CD includes songs co-written by multi-platinum songwriter, Bill Shore, who wrote Garth Brooks' biggest hit single, "Wild Horses". Shore has written huge hits for George Strait, Charley Pride and Sawyer Brown and had over 200 songs recorded by artists such as Porter Waggoner, Chris LeDoux, Vern Gosdin, Moe Bandy, Helen Cornelius, Stealing Angels, as well as many other major/independent American and international artists. Shore has received multiple BMI Million Performance Achievement Citations and BMI awards and his songs have been used in many television shows and motion pictures.

That's where Brooks Maguire first told me about his new CD, and gave me a copy as soon as it was done. It's called "The Road I Never Chose," and he's celebrating its release with a free concert from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Waipuna Chapel Amphitheater in Kula, at the corner of Omaopio Road and Kula Highway. Brooks is one of those guys who's usually smiling, whether he's singing or not. After singing easygoing covers of other people's music at Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina forever, the album showcases his own material. A hopeful, Christian thread runs through the songs, nicely produced by Joe Beck and Jim Frazier in Nashville. Musicians Tom Hall, Benny Uyetake, Jamie Gallo, Michael Kennedy, Christopher Hightower, Craig Simecheck, Sonshine Rivers and Joshua Rugg will be backing him in the concert. My guess is it'll be crowded. Brooks has lots of friends.
During my conversation with Brooks Maguire, in which he summarized his amazing career and recalled pivotal connections made, I was struck by his unforced humility. Maguire’s long, remarkable journey as a passionate musician, professional performer and recording artist is full of opportunities to name drop and aggrandize, but Maguire’s soft spoken way of recalling the past reveals a man who laughs easily, considers himself blessed, and knows the value of working hard to obtain your dreams. Maguire mentions the names of fellow musicians and artists who helped him along the way. In fact, he does this so often, and with the intent of giving credit where credit is due, he often appears to making a list of the people he’s extremely thankful for. With the release of his third CD, “The Road I Never Chose,” Maguire is entering a new phase of his career, which points to a potentially rewarding new path ahead. The album is terrific, with songs that reminded me of Kenny Loggins and James Taylor at their most thoughtful and tender. While most peg the song “Maui” to have obvious commercial breakout probability, my money’s on “I Live Where the Rain Goes,” a rousing tune I crank up whenever I drive to Lahaina. Maguire’s first two albums weren’t commercial breakthroughs, though he admits to listening to them recently and liking what he heard, albeit with “if I only knew then what I know now” hindsight. “The Road I Never Chose” is of the highest caliber, a collection of clever, playful songwriting, melded with skilled, soulful work from Maguire and his collaborators. Maguire’s new album is of the highest caliber. In the build up to Brooks’ CD release, he spoke with me about growing up with music, his fulfilled dream of meeting Jackson Browne, how Willie K and Barry Flanagan introduced him to Maui music venues in the late 80’s, his current, long-standing gig as the musician at Cheeseburger in Paradise and the creation of his new album. : So Jackson Browne led the way. Who encouraged you as a young boy? Brooks Maguire: At the age of 7, my music teacher in Texas, gave me ukulele lessons. I got most of my singing ability in church. My mom was the choir director, my sisters and I occasionally sang special numbers in church. My mom's side of the family all sing. So, it’s part DNA, part conditioning. I took drum lessons at 13, picked up guitar in college. I was discovering Jackson Browne’s music, Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles were coming in, so I borrowed a guitar and taught myself these songs. Within a year of learning guitar, I had my first public performance. Graduating from college, I didn’t wanna use my accounting/finance degree, so I moved to Austin, since I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I grew up.
Brooks Maguire singer, songwriter, guitarist was raised in Texas and Louisiana, and now makes his home on Maui. From a musical family, he grew up singing, heard Jackson Browne’s "For Everyman" album, and drew the inspiration to be a singer/songwriter. He borrowed a friend’s 12-string guitar, and began to teach himself to play. Influenced by Browne, J.D. Souther, Dan Fogelberg and Bonnie Raitt, Brooks said, “The emotions stirred and touched me through Jackson's heartfelt music and made me want to touch others in a similar way....it's a double blessing to have a vehicle to express my own thoughts and emotions and to be able to touch the hearts and minds of others who listen to my music!” When I asked Brooks what advice he would give to somebody who wants to be a singer-songwriter/performer, Brooks said, “Just do it! Sing! Write! Perform! Learn and practice your instrument with the intent of improving your craft. Seek out other performers/singer-songwriters whose music/styles you are drawn to. Ask others who are more accomplished in the areas you desire to improve to mentor you or just share their knowledge and experience. And most importantly, have fun doing it for yourself. If others enjoy it, then that's just icing on the cake!” Brooks writes positive message songs including the rhythmic “I Live Where The Rain Goes,” and the uplifting Christian rock song “I Will Do The Same” which has a very strong production (which I can hear this doing very well on major Christian Rock stations). Maddie and Gray is a cute song written for his children and “Love’s Work Is Never Done” is simply beautiful. There’s a funky New Orleans influence on “Land of Regrets.” Brooks’ music is like Little Feat, Neville Brothers, Lennon and McCartney and James Taylor rolled into one I love it! On this CD, he collaborated with singer/songwriter/producer Joe Beck, a world class musician/producer/hit maker who helped create the album as part of recording deal with A.C.T. Music Group - Nashville. Top Nashville session players Duncan Mullins and Steve Brewster play on the CD, as well as Will McFarlane--formerly with Bonnie Raitt-- who played guitar/slide, and Grea Rhenne, Michael McDonald’s back-up singer. Brooks‘ band includes veteran Maui musicians; Mike Kennedy - drums, Tom Hall - guitar, vocalists Jamie Gallo and Sonshine Rivers, Christopher Hightower - bass/vocals, Craig Simecheck - keyboards,and a guest appearance by Benny Uyetake. Brooks plays at Cheeseburger in Paradise, 811 Front Street in Lahaina, Thursday and Sunday, 4:30-10:30pm.
