We are all die-hard Metallica fans," explained vocalist/guitarist Ivan Vargas, regarding the name of his band, XIT LYT. "The name came from their song, 'Enter Sandman'. But we thought the name also has a deep meaning. We live in a futuristic new world. The word 'evil' falls in the same category as black, dark, and night. And the word, 'good' falls in the same category as white, day, and light. In this new world we live in, it seems as though all the good things in life are being overtaken by all things evil. We thought the name XIT LYT ("exit light") represents this new day thats being consumed by night. We changed the spelling for creativity." With that in mind, it's safe to say XIT LYT is a harder rock/metal band, although the members claim they're not restricted to any particular style. The band originated when Vargas met drummer Jose Ruiz on MySpace and the two clicked right away. After writing and rehearsing bass-less for about six months, bassist Gabriel Gil overheard Vargas and Ruiz at a local practice studio amd became interested, thus completing the band. "We think it's crazy how fast things seem to be moving for us," said Vargas. "We're meeting the right kind of people and doors are being opened. We feel confident about the future of our band." --- Paul Henning

Everyone knows about those local bands I like to refer to as "Heavy Hitters". You know them, they are the ones who have an amazing group of members who all have exceptional talent, and will pull a crowd at every show they play even if it's on a Tuesday night! Some of those bands have been on a break, waiting to reforge their line ups, and are ready to kill in 2010. Yes, I am really looking forward to that, and I suspect at some point over the next 11 months I will write about at least one of them, and I am sure without any doubt, that other contributing writers will do the same, because these guys and gals will always get the press. So what about those bands that are equally amazing and talented who for some reason or another do not get the press? Reflecting back on 2009 there were a few bands who have been flying just under the radar waiting for you to hear and see them. One of those bands is XIT LYT a three piece rock/metal band from Orlando who remind me of a very early Rage Against The Machine, in the sense that they both have powerful lyrics enveloped in solid grooves. 'The Spark' by XIT LYT is like a rockin metal lullaby that sticks to you, one listen and you will find yourself replaying it over and over again in your head. Another song that I dig is called 'No More War' and it entices all those feelings we as humans encounter when we think of the brutality of war. With a growly undertone set behind the clean vocals of Ivan Vargas, his guitar licks mirror the same. Ultra crunchy in one moment, and clean in the next. While the bass playing of Gabriel Gil brings you on a trip through the battle field, the drumming of Jose Ruiz sets the time of the marching. I recently asked Ivan about their plans for 2010 and he said: "We plan on hitting it harder than ever next year. And to put out a EP."
