Black Ball was released by Erisa Rei on January 3, 2012. It charted at #2 on the Roots Music Report's Roots-Rock Internet charts, #27 on the Roots 66 charts and #110 on the AMA charts up with all of the major label artists.
And I guess that if the song was good enough to chart high on Americana and Roots radio, then it was "hooky" enough and "radio-friendly" enough for them... Just sayin'...
WhatUNeed2Hear- From what I was told from a Warner Bros. Record rep, having a strong hook is more of a POP thing. I actually asked about "hooks" and the genre I'm in, Americana, is more lenient towards this. I guess it did alright, since I charted on top Roots and Americana charts. I have no interest in playing the pop field. I occasionally write with other people in other genres, but pop bores me. If it were pop, I would definitely agree with your critique.
