Lyrics

It was early Monday morning when I got that call ~ said she’d been to the doctor and I should come on home ~ she was standing in the front yard ~ teardrops in her eyes ~ she says the cancer’s got me baby ~ they say that I’m gonna die ~ so I took her by the hands ~ and we fell on our knees ~ she looked me in the eye and she asked me ~ so I made a Promise that I didn’t want to keep ~ as I held her in my arms and we faded off to sleep ~ I swore I’d take her to the ocean ~ watch her float away from me ~ spread her ashes in the wind and set her spirit free ~ that night I made a Promise I didn’t want to keep ~ the days went by so fast and it was hard to see ~ the woman that I loved wither away in front of me ~ well she could barely stand up and she could hardly speak ~ she’d look me in the eye and she’d ask me ~ and I made a Promise that I didn’t want to keep ~ as I held her in my arms and we faded off to sleep ~ I swore I’d take her to the ocean and watch her float away from me ~ I’d spread her ashes in the wind and set her spirit free ~ that night I made a Promise I didn’t want to keep ~ but I held on tight with all my might ~ and she put up a valiant fight ~ but in the end we said goodbye and I headed out to South Carolina ~ and I kept my Promise that I didn’t want to keep ~ cause I took her to the ocean and watched her float away from me ~ I spread her ashes in the wind and I set her spirit free ~ then I sat down on that beach knowing she’d have done the same for me ~ that night I kept my Promise I didn’t want to keep ~ oh that night I kept my Promise I didn’t want to keep
