"Vicarious" is about marriage, both the history and future of it. It is from the point of view of a woman who marries and suddenly loses her identity, her last name, and her sense of independence. The song deals with the mixed emotions of joining with one person for life, the doubts one has, and the pressures of society to conform to others' ideas of what marriage should be.
