Lyrics

Grandpa sowed a corn crop in the ground, at the tender age of 9. He sowed that corn in a mighty straight line yes, he sowed that corn crop fine. He often told me as he held my hand that he prayed as he sowed and tilled the land, the very best sermons I ever heard were the ones he preached, for he loved God's word. And he sowed that corn in a mighty straight line and he preached his sermons o' so fine. He raised a family with his little sweet wife on that Ozark farm all of his life. His rows were straight, his needs were few, his work was hard, but his work was true, and the corn grew strong and tall in a mighty straight line. But I left that family farm the simple life it weren't for me. I didn't care to grow straight crops in my life all I wanted was to be free. Now as I look back over my life I remember my failures and think of my strife. I know my gramps was right as he towed the line.... 83 years down the road grandpa laid on down his hoe. See, he prayed and he preached and he watched his crops grow and then he breathed his last one fall. At heaven's gates with his hoe in his hand, his head's bowed low... he quietly stands, the Lord says, "Son, you did fine. You lived a mighty straight line...." And he sowed that corn in a mighty straight line and he preached his sermons o' so fine. He raised a family with his little sweet wife on that Ozark farm all of his life. His rows were straight, his needs were few, his work was hard, but his work was true, and the corn grew strong and tall in a mighty straight line.
