Lyrics

I've always been a rambler. My fortune's been quite hard. I've always loved the women, drank whisky, and played cards. My parents treated me kindly, cause they had no boy but me. My mind was bent on rambling. At home I couldn't agree. There was a wealthy doctor who lived in the country by. He had a handsome daughter, on whom I cast an eye. She was so tall and handsome, so pretty, and so fair. There's not a girl in the whole wide world to whom I could compare. I asked if it made any difference if I crossed over the plane. She said it makes no difference, if you return again. She said that she'd prove true to me, until I proved unkind. These two hand departed from the one I left behind. I left ol' North Caorlina. To Marion I did go. On to Johnson City. Gonna see this world o'er. Where the money and work were plentiful, and the girls treated me kind. But the one main object in my heart was the one I left behind. I rambled out one evening down on the public square. The mail had just arrived, and the mailman met me there. He handed me a letter which led me to understand, that the girl I left in ol' Caroline had married another man. I read a few lines further, till I found that it was true. May heart was filled with trouble. I didn't know what to do. My heart was filled with trouble, and trouble's on my mind. I'm gonna drink and gamble for the one I left behind.
