This song was inspired by old-time fiddlers. Like mocking birds, fiddle players used to collect the songs, from other fiddlers—often walking great distances, over mountains and through valleys just to learn a new tune as if they could fill themselves up with music. The narrator in this song (who is in my mind a fiddler) observes the courting rituals of the mocking bird and relates them to his own understanding of love.
