Can I Have a Puppy I was just five years old when grandma gave me that pup in a cardboard box on the floorboard in the middle of that ole truck she said you have to feed and water him keep him warm and dry and he will forever be your friend well spike grew with me and spike ran with me he stayed with me in that old tent in the back yard my best friend he was my best friend through the fields and the hills Spike was a little brown and white heinz 57 not a fancy dog but he was my best dog I was 11 years old sept16 1965 when mom woke me for school she said son i have some sad news your father called from work and said i think spike got hit last night he was lying along the highway So mom brother and i jumped in that old rambler we picked spike up and wrapped him in a blanket I cried all day at school the longest day i could remember the world seemed so cruel so i remembered what grandma said keep your chin up son theyll be a better day lessons that learn make a better way so take the words for what i say grandma can i have a puppy
