Description
“Word Play” is the title cut form my latest CD. It is an acoustic guitar driven song discussing the human tendency to use words to dance around, rather than directly interrogate and solve, problems. It is ironic in a world that is ever more technologically “advanced” in the area of communication that we seem to be losing a crucial skill that, adding to the irony, actually is one of the defining features of being human. The little story in this song is designed to illuminate this issue.
Lyrics
Word Play © 2009 Eric Henderson Intro Verse I don’t remember why I had to call you I can’t think of a thing I need to say But I recall the time we spent together Like yesterday Verse I don’t remember all the words we managed We both got so good at that word play But I remember suffering the damage From the words we could not say Chorus Word Play Can temporarily make things OK The way the words can circle ‘round A simple truth or sacred ground As the words we pull and tug To sweep under the rug The things we cannot say With word play Verse I looked at an old photo in an album And thought about the day we said goodbye It took me by surprise that our words had turned to lies And we didn’t even try (to use our) Chorus Word Play Can temporarily make things OK The way the words can circle ‘round A simple truth or sacred ground As the words we pull and tug To sweep under the rug The things we cannot say With word play Bridge The phrrases they float Right out of our mind Your lexicon does A two-step with mine We pull and we tug And sweep beneath the rug The things we cannot say With word play Verse I try to understand it using logic I figure I could calmly analyze But all these pretty words just seem so tragic Tears rolled from my eyes Chorus Word Play Can temporarily make things OK The way the words can circle ‘round A simple truth or sacred ground As the words we pull and tug To sweep under the rug The things we cannot say With word play
