Description
Song from the debut LP of this singer-songwriter-guitarist, who cut his teeth in the New York City punk rock scene before striking out on his own. This edgy track accelerates into a hard-driving, unapologetic calling-out of another’s wreckless life of blinded excess and self-destruction. The subject brutally wrenches himself away from a drama-filled relationship, longing to experience freedom from its pain, but obviously still tortured with regret.
Lyrics
You want to blow up the world You’ve got to have the perfect girl And dress her in your uniform Living safe behind your walls Making all the important calls And never questioning it I tried to help you But you didn’t want me to So I wash my hands of you and cry Cry, cry You’re different from the other boys You can play with all of their sharp toys And not get hurt at all But can’t you see where it ends You’re down to your final friend And standing on the cliff alone I tried to help you But you didn’t want me to So I wash my hands of you and cry Cry, cry, cry, cry Where will you go when there’s nothing left And all that remains of your nest Has been reduced to ash Well I’m not the smartest man alive But I saw you marching to the line And I told you not to cross it I tried to help you But you didn’t want me to So I wash my hands of you and cry, cry I tried to help you But you wouldn’t let me through So now I leave you to die Die, die Oh, oh, oh And it makes me cry Cry, cry, cry
