One night I was entertaining a couple of young ladies outside a cottage near the beach at Pointe-de-Poulet (Chicken Butt Point) on Guadeloupe. After a certain number of planteurs (one of those drinks that has absolutely no effect on you, you think, until you drink that fourteenth one and wake up on an entirely different island wearing random parts of the uniform of a boatswain in the Italian navy), it occurred to me just what the allure of the islands is all about.
